This is an annual hunt for me and Sep. 1st couldn't get here soon enough.! After a 23 hour ferry ride from Kodiak, Alaska to Whittier, Alaska, I was finally on the road to Anchorage where I would park my pickup for a week at a buddy's house and Jet out to Bethel, Ak on Alaska Airlines. I met my buddy Steve from Ohio at the airport, he had come up for the adventure and to help his "old" buddy pack meat...(hopefully) I returned to my same camp site I've been using for the last 3 years and it did not disappoint. Within a few minutes of getting the tents up and situated we glassed up from camp a handful of shooters, and 2 that were exceptional. The next morning arrived Wet, Windy and foggy....nothing new for Alaska..lol. We decided to take it easy that morning and fuel up with a big breakfast, coffee etc. Around 11 everything got nice and we headed to our spotting knob and relocated the 2 big boys. After a little talk about wind, how far from camp, which would be the easier pack, and which one we really liked, we decided to make a stalk on the big bull that I ended up harvesting. Playing the wind and putting him back to bed after his noon time stroll, we made a stalk that ended at 18 yards from this Giant, We had a strong wind in our face and he never knew we were there. I could only see the tops of his palms in the brush and quickly got the tripod up and rested the ole trusty .338 win mag. A simple cow call got him to immediately stand up and the brush was now about mid shoulder,....so I just held at the toi of the brush and touched it off. The bull grunted and hunched up, took 2 strides, went down and came up looking like a front loader just scooped a load of dirt and moss with his huge fronts. I chambered a second round and as I watched him getting woozy, I knew it wouldn't be needed. He tipped over less than 10 yards from where I hit him. two days later and 711 pounds of just meat were back to the mountain top where we could get the airplane. when you tip one of these guys over the work truly has just begum....great trip. can't wait till next year...:)

That is a superb trophy! Nice palmation, huge fronts, and long tines should make your bull score really high. And he's very symmetrical too. How wide was he? And did you bother to green-score him? No matter....you have your supply of meat for the winter.
You said you used a .338 WM, which is also my favorite chambering for Alaska. What bullet did you load for your moose? Lastly, you may need to buy another freezer; blacktail season is just around the corner on Kodiak.
Thanks for sharing and hearty congratulations!

Dawaba, I use federal premium ammo pushing 210 gr Nosler partitions always. Even on the Big Bears and Mt. Goat. I have a dedicated freezer just for moose. Our deer are tasty....but nothing like moose. We love it.

How do you get the moose home with that little plane? Do you have to make several trips?
