What should one do? Mag storage empty, fully loaded, partially loaded? Rifle or pistol from 22 up. If loaded will it affect the spring? These are firearms in the safe NOT for carry or home protection.

Spring technology is much better than even 5 years ago. I have several mags that stay loaded (full) Those are my SHTF guns. Most are unloaded in the safe.

I read an article recently that stated what boonee said. That even magazines that stay under constant load for many years still have force to push the follower up the magazine. The author stated that he had magazines loaded for several years and when he went to shoot them, he experienced no issues.

Use (compression then decompression) is what wears springs. Keeping a mag full and the spring compressed does not wear them out.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

I have an autoloader (pistol) that has been kept with the magazine full for over a decade now. Once a year I take it out and shoot all of the cartridges out of it, whether it needs it or not. Then I clean it, reload it - and back it goes into its hidey-hole for another year.
That gun has never once done anything but act just as it is supposed to. After ten years and ten re-loadings, the magazine is just as big a pain in the butt to fill up as it always has been. If the spring has gotten any weaker, you couldn't prove it by me.

They don't do much good unloaded. Never had a problem.

Use (compression then decompression) is what wears springs. Keeping a mag full and the spring compressed does not wear them out. This! ^^^ Think about how many officers keep there mags full, often for an entire year before emptying them to qualify. I keep 6 loaded mags for my Sig, empty each one at least once a month if not more. After almost 20,000 rounds fired through the gun and magazines, they have yet to fail.

I read somewhere that the US military has 45 mags that have been loaded since WWII for testing. Still function properly.

I don't think it matters much one way or another.

Same story here.. Was cleaning out a closet awhile back. Found a range bag from my college days (almost 30 yrs now) found a couple of loaded 1911 mags in the bottom... Took them with me the next time I went to the lease and they functioned flawlessly

Loaded for me.
Based on my investment in loaded, I sincerely hope that they are good long term......
