Hey Everyone,
I am getting my duck boat ready for this fall and have a question about the type of battery I should use. We will be running a 27hp Godevil SD, running lights, and a 24 inch light bar during duck season and adding in a trolling motor during the off season for fishing. Do I need to go with a deep cycle battery or will a regular battery work? Been reading about the deep cycles a bit and I'm not sure I need one given the limited things I'll be running off it. Also, the GD does have a alternator on it. Thanks.

I would get a cranking battery to start the motor, and a marine deep cycle battery to run everything else. If you are planning to fish out of the boat, having two batteries is an absolute necessity. Trolling motors really drain battery, and you don't want to be caught out on the lake and not have enough juice to crank your engine.

Great advise above. Always two batteries. Learned the hard way!

One battery will be fine for your setup during hunting season without a trolling motor. You can easily use a small battery for the motor, running lights, and light bar. The leds draw absolutely nothing, that motor you have will not charge the battery at idle but will above 2,000 rpms, I assume it is a Kohler since it's a 27HP, that motor takes almost nothing to start. When you run a trolling motor you will need a second battery. I have only run one during duck season for years. One night I ran my 2 led light bars for 5 hours while bow fishing and my motor cranked right up after, it was an experiment, I had a spare trolling motor battery with me if needed, I would not worry about it.

Did you check the regulations before bow fishing? Better safe than sorry

I might have to experiment as well with my light. I'm always worried about how long it is on when the motor isn't running.

The nice thing about two batteries is you have a back up incase on dies or something odd happens.
I run one two 31 series and keep a set of jumper cables

I run one two 31 series and keep a set of jumper cables This. I've had to use my trolling motor battery during duck season. I kept it in the front to balance the boat better and run lights...and thank goodness it was there. Just enough juice for when my motor battery got the chillz and went dead! It's a deep cycle...
