This is my homemade cutting jig, this one is 6 part, I also have 4, 5, 8, 9, and 10 segment cutting jigs. All homemade. This is one of the discs that I will cut in 4 pieces. I use a hacksaw with a 12or 14 TPI to do the cutting. These are the pieces of 2 discs, one maple and one walnut.

All the parts dry fitted to be sure they fit correctly. Then glued and clamped together. These have to sit overnight before turning.

Next is the drilling sequences After turning, before any finish is applied. Sanded to 600 grit and first coat of oil finish, it will take about 5 coats of oil finish before they are completed.

This is a very simple version of an explanation of how I do laminated or segmented calls. There are several steps that also are done even before the gluing process. Plus a lot of little tricks that I have picked up over the years. The cutting jig idea I stole from the fishing rod building people. A professional set up would cost about $60, mine cost me a few hours and scrap wood. It also doubles as a drink holder when not cutting segments or using my vise.

I see "1 and 2" on the jig, so is that "cut by number" Really neat way of doing them DC, I like the randomness of them (color and pattern). You should try the same technique, using similar materials some of the knife makers here use for knife handles, bet you would come up with some crazy designs!

Yes it is, this jig is off by about 2 degrees, those cuts were numbered to be sure each of the discs get numbered so the different pieces of maple and walnut will match up. If cutting 6 segments and you don't interchange those pieces, there will be a gap in the glue up. Actually this series of pics were made for some new callmakers, it is a cheap and inexpensive method of creating laminated calls. This costs nothing except a new 14 or 12 TPI hacksaw blade. The real laminators have table saws and or bandsaws, to get the angles correct. One of those will set you back a 3 or 4 hundred dollars. As to the crazy designs, I make those, but only for contests. The time invested is way too much to try to make and sell them for what they are worth. Even these 2 aren't for sale, they are a trade to another callmaker.

Daaaayyyyuuummm, dc, you have more patients than me. Pretty dern cool. Thanks for the comments. Not really much patience involved, every step goes fairly quickly and you see progress at the end of each step. Time consuming yes, there are faster methods, but in the end you are always waiting for the glue to dry during some of the steps. That is why I usually make 4 of these at a time. I can be working on the next step of the next call body while one or more parts are drying.

Yeah but, it took you awhile to learn it. When I would be learning, that's when they would all be SAW DUST.

Jealous of your skills. One day when I don't have a dozen projects going I'm going to tackle the lathe.
