I've seen it from dogs all my life, but never seen it discussed on any forum. I don't use charcoal anymore, but I just had a dead tree taken down. Here you go; We burned most of the tree outside of my back yard. The fallen tree left some big holes in my back yard. I used some of the cooled coals to fill the holes. I just saw Cracker out there eating the coals. Am I the only one?

Nope.. My labs will sneak a small piece of lump charcoal that I drop when I clean out the smoker & chomp on it..
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

I've had one dog get a respiratory infection after eating coal. I try and keep them away from it now.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

With all the rains, we've had to occasionally put the dogs in the garage when we'd leave. They (I think it's the wife's lab mostly, but I don't have solid proof) ripped into a bag of charcoal. They were covered up in toys.

Creekrunner.....I've found as everybody else, 100 toys, they still chew on my chair.
Not sure about charcoal, I'm sure Jessie would relish it ESPECIALLY if I said "NO, LEAVE IT"

While on subject of BBQ grills I thought I would share an experience I had a short while ago. Had a pup with a hernia and when Vet x-rayed him he found a piece of wire in his stomach. Long story short it pasted but I was out fee for additional X-Ray. Come to find out the vet own dog had the same thing happen but he had to operate and remove the wire. Both were pieces of wire brush used to clean BBQ grill that had broken off while cleaning grill. Pieces of wire brush must have had the meat flavor from the grill on them and dog licked them up off ground around the grill.

A few years ago I had my grill brush hanging from a hook on the side of the grill. My Brittany chewed off the entire side of it that looks like an SOS pad. About a week later we had a hard rain and I found a turd shaped spool of steel in the yard. That had to hurt. And she will eat charcoal if given the chance. She is a great family dog, incredible nose she loves to put to use, and prey drive all day long til she can't walk... but she ain't the sharpest tool in the shed.
