This is my Gamemaster model hunting knife. The woods is a atabalized Maple, grown, cut and stabilized by Pete Crowl. I did the Damascus and the engraving. 5 Inch blade. I think I made it last year for a client. He seemed happy with it. Pete's wood is a bit high cost but he always has the best spalted wood. He does his own spalting, watches each tree to get it just right and does a great job stabilizing it so you get the best, in my opinion of course. Pete's too.

How in the $#$# can you get a tree to spalt? That's a new one on me; I guess that's something I have to read about. Spalted lumber is my choice in woods even over burl it just has that certain flair. I have tons of spalted lumber I've bought over the years that is worthless. After milling most of it there was less than 5% spalting in it. That's a nice piece of wood on that hunter Jerry; I paid quite a bit for some scales several years ago for a custom knife, good spalted lumber is not cheap. BTW; nice engraving brother.

Jank, I checked with Pete a bit ago. He does not have any for sale at this time. He cuts the tree in about 20 inches length, does some stuff to it and covers it with leaves. This year they had a bad dry spell so the woods he had set up did not spalt. Mother nature at work.
He has some ready to start setting up now so it will be next year before he has more. Its a shame cause I sure did want some. I only have one piece of Hackberry he had worked up from last year. I have never used it before but I will sometime this year. He really prefers the maple because the sugars in it.

Good piece of information.

Jank, just a little piece of information, spalting is the early stages of rot. If you catch right, you can dry it, stabalize it, and have a pretty piece of wood. Let it go just a bit too long and it's worthless. Catching it at the right time is an art not a science.

Yup, wait too long and the spalted wood will eventually be worthless. I have, I think, still got some beautifully spalted Pecan. I was gonna use some of it this past week, but it was too far gone. There may be a board or two left. I wish I knew how to stabilize it.
If someone wants some of that spalted pecan, let me know. I can go look in the barn.
