From what I am seeing on antler growth this year is going to be really good. I know this is worthless without pictures. Try to get some maybe tomorrow.

How much rain have you had this year Don? verses this time last year? I am at nearly 16" with more coming this week, already at half our normal rainfall, but we are still ratd in severe drought. Gets worse west of me towards Throckmorton.

Soooo... what you are saying don k is that the protein is already working? I hope it keeps raining. I am at 15" since March 5th and 19"+ since Jan 1st. Add in another 6.5" from later October till the end of the year and a mild winter on top of all the rain. Weed and new growth browse is really great now. Nothing like rainfall at the right time.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I am not sure on the exact rainfall measurement but this is the best spring I have seen in a very long time. I have not got a good look at the deer that I have been feeding the protein. The bucks I have been seeing are out in a larger pasture with my Ibex males. They sometimes come and eat with them so they are getting goat feed. I don't know if it is the goat feed or all the green vegetation that is helping them. Probably a little of everything plus age.

tlk, that rut will bring 'em out, as always. But yes I do agree, could be tougher hunting in general. Our place is so lush it looks like something out of an English novel. Unreal. A neighbor of mine said he hasn't EVER seen things so green, and he's been around these parts his whole life. He's in his 70s. I just wish the quail would come back

Hopefully the condition and thickness of the range, helps fawn survival this year. I have winter grasses and native forage as high as I have seen it here in about 6 years.
As far as acorn production, extreme drought for us last fall and we had a bumper crop of acorns, albeit small and low quality. Oaks trees will cycle, so maybe at least we will have some higher quality acorns this fall.

We are at flood levels here in East Texas. All the lakes are overflowing and the creeks are above the banks. Trees are falling over because the ground is too saturated to hold them up. I drilled a post hole for a fence at one of the higher spots on my land and it was half full of water before I could put the post into the hole. It's impossible to drive anywhere on my land without getting stuck, and it hasn't rained here in a week. We are expecting a lot of rain next week, which means more growth and more mud.
I'm struggling to keep my trails open and my pastures in grass with all the other stuff that is trying to take over. Hopefully you are all right and this is the perfect conditions for antler growth. I'm always looking forward for that day when I see a decent buck on my land. So far, it's never happened, but there is always that day to look forward to when it does!!!!

Bucks here (Deep East Texas) are just starting to grow main beams. We live out in the country and have been here for 30 years. I have never seen things as 'lush' as they are right now. Unless we have an exceptionally dry summer (later on)...things should be good for the deer herds. Fawns should start hitting the ground by the end of this month. By the end of August...we should have a pretty good idea of the survival rate. The time to exercise predator control is NOW! Plenty of Coyotes running around...where I live.

The rain has been a blessing for all wildlife and it should have a wonderful effect on Antler growth. If Texas summers hold true to form, all of this Green will be Brown in August and the Deer will have to start moving around for groceries

Our county has been hit so hard with drought since 2010 our native and improved grasses have been replaced with worthless weeds and flowers that will mature shortly and we will go from great to poor range conditions overnight.

Same here. You don't get over a train wreck like what we have been through in a single season. Takes a long time to recover and some of the country will never be the same. I lost 90% of my native pecans in the bottom.
