Took my Savage 11VT 308 out for the first time today. Although I've shot a handful of scoped rifles owned by friends and family members, this is only my 2nd one and I sold that first one not too long ago. First was a 17HMR that was hit or miss.
Got it sighted in at 50 yards and then moved to 100 with just a bit of tweaking and ended up shooting four 3-shot groups with no turret adjustments at the end of the day.
Fiocchi 150 grain FMJ - 1.12"
Fiocchi 175 grain SMK - .93"
Federal 168 grain SMK - .41" & .73"
I was really happy with the results. I'm aware that they would have opened up with 5-shot groups, but I'm relatively new to the scoped rifle game and I'm just happy to be heading in the right direction. Looking forward to getting some more range time with it. I'll probably stick with the Federal 168 SMK unless it starts treating me differently.
Scope is an SWFA SS 16x42. Other than the lack of forgiveness on eye placement, I like it quite a bit. It's not the most unforgiving scope I've ever used by any means, but I was hoping a fixed power scope might be more forgiving than this one is. Maybe that's just the nature of a 16x.

The FEDERAL Gold Match168SMK is where it's at. Hard to beat those for over the counter accuracy. And the Savages seem to love them. Good shootin

Good shooting.
If you're having trouble with eye placement you may need to move the scope. The SS 5-20 I have is one of the most forgiving I have been behind.
Close your eyes, get comfortable behind the rifle, open your eyes. If you have to move your head forward to get edge to edge clarity, stop. Move the scope back. If you have to move your head back to get edge to edge clarity, stop, move the scope forward. Once you have this (eye relief) correct for your eye, then go about leveling the scope again, and torquing the ring screws back down. Recheck zero.

Good shootin! Probably right. Thanks! How close does the target look at 50 yards with a 16x scope? Really big. It's very big even at 100. This 16x was built to get me out to 300-500 yards, not for the 50-100 yard shots. But you gotta crawl before you can walk. You gonna be doing a lot of 100 yard shots with that 16X? Not many. The local range has a qual test to get to the 300 yard area. Shouldn't be too tough to pass that and head further out pretty soon. Gonna need fireman's class to get past that I think. Good shooting.

I tried to go through that procedure when I set the scope in the rings. It's not the forward/back stuff that's getting me. It's mostly the up/down. I got the lowest rings I could, but there is no extended cheek weld on the stock. Might be that a stock upgrade is on order to fix that. The advice I've seen from you and others to let the shot surprise you is really what I tried to do today and I think it helped quite a bit. I could tell I stayed on target through the trigger pull much better when I made a point to try to do it.

A $50 Karsten cheek rest will solve your head height probkem. Shooting 4-500 is no different than shooting 300. It's 700-1000 were things get dicey if you are not comfortable behind the trigger

www.triadtactical.comI have their stock packs on all my rifles. Build it up as needed, and a zipper pouch and five bullet loops sure is handy
