Well my place is covered in hogs and I've got some good size cat prints showing up also so I'm thinking I wouldn't mind a pistol to carry while out there. I've shot plenty and I'm thinking a plastic gun would be ideal over a 1911. I'm leaning towards a 40, 45, or 10mm but would consider revolvers too. What's my best option? I'm also not brand loyal but I seem to shoot glock better than most that I've tried. Wouldn't mind an xdm to try either.

Anything in a full size frame in the calibers you listed would do fine.

I purchased a Sig Sauer p320 in .40 last spring and that thing drives tacks at 20yds. The P320 is a modular platform as well so you can change calibers relatively cheap if you choose to do so. I think they offer it in .380, .357 SIG, .40 and .45 Not overly pricey either.

The 6.8 is the #1 choice for hunting deer and hogs in an AR15

Any handgun you can shoot accurately under stress would work.
A DA/SA revolver in .38 or .357is alway a good choice Just point and pull the trigger.
For a semi auto handgun a 9mm with the right ammunition would work. A good balance of recoil and energy to dissuade a pig or big bobcat. A 40 S&W or 10mm would have more power and also more recoil.
Glock, SIG & S&W are extremely reliable and can be had in just about any size and caliber that can help balance their shootablity with their ease of carrying.

^^ What you shoot comfortably is what you'll shoot reliably. I will say that both my kids can handle my .40 with no issues. But then again, I grow em big. I've got a 6'7" 17 yr old and a 6' 13 yr old. They're the poster children for MiracleGro.

What's the recoil like in a 10mm? I've typically shot 40 in a glock 23 and comfortable with that. Only 45's I've shot were 1911 and that's an entirely different comparison.
