i went out to the workshop just before lunch. Had a good book. Got comfortable and into the book, but then the crows started raising heck. Sounded like they were on the tin roof, but then it got louder. What the heck...I'll go run them off. Got off the couch and walked into the workshop and there were two crows standing at the glass front door. They were cawing at full volume. They saw me and left in a hurry. Ok, back to the couch and the book. In 10 minutes they were back at the door, cawing as hard as they could. They saw me again and flew. I grabbed the 22 and eased the door open. They were in a big cedar tree, and I dropped one of them. The other one left and I guess he went and got all their buddies, because it has really been loud around here for hours. They stay out of range now. I guess they know that my 223 is at the 'smith'.
I wonder what that cawing at the door was all about. As for their anger issues now, I guess I understand. I wonder if there's a smarter bird than crows, or a bird with a longer memory?

I remember reading somewhere that crows will gather and have sort of a funeral for one that went down.

Hang the bird in the tree away from the house(if there is anything left of it). That will usually keep them away.

The wife just walked in from a visit to her garden. She said that the crows must still be mad, since they just keep making angry noise, and there's a lot of them. Geez, I must've shot their mayor or something.

Can't hang the bird, since it has been disposed of.
As for them crowing for the next 10 years, I might have to shoot myself....
Wait till I get my 223 back from Horizon. I'll have em crowing....

I got 6 one day...winged one out of a tree...it hit the ground flipping and flopping around...his buddies made the mistake of coming back to help him....5 more dead crows....when they stopped coming back I finished him off.

I have a bunch of pecan trees I try to keep the crows out of in the fall. Hanging a dead one in the tree doesn't phase them a bit. It did make a neighbor ask me if I was into voodoo of something. The cries of a wounded one will make them come in with no regard to danger. An owl or hawk will make them go crazy. I've even seen them go crazy and dive down after a coyote. One crazy crow can call a bunch of them quick. I picked the feathers off one once and got my wife to cook it. I gave some to the dog and he spit it out. I didn't even taste it after that. I don't like to shoot them with a rifle because the bullets can fly too far shooting up into the air, but I've killed a ton of them with my 410...

Gotta say that hermano got me to laughing. "The dog spit it out". Yep, that's a good sign that it won't tast like pheasant.
As for whether there's a nest nearby, I don't know.

Throw a pile of black feathers and wadded-up black garbage bag next to an owl decoy on the ground in the back yard, and play the 'crow in distress' call (google for the mp3). Be ready with a 12GA shotgun loaded with #6's.

Crows are really interesting animals. We had 3 fall out of a nest and raised two of them to adults. They have a complex family structure of up to 8 or 9 members. They will stake out a territory and go to war with other families to protect it. Smartest bird I have ever seen as ours would fetch packs of cigarettes out of a carton, get your billfold off the dresser in another room and find the remote control when lost. The two at your door may have been fed by a neighbor or they saw their reflection in the glass. More than likely they are juveniles.

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!
