For a cheaper alternative, the TC Venture comes in 6.5x284....not sure if it was a limited run or if they are still cranking them out.

6.5x284 is a Limited Run item in Ventures. Only guy that has had them last 2 years I've seen is a dealer in Albany NY that sells 'em on GunBroker. Fluted 24" 8 twist barrel in either regular blue/black or the gray SS looking WeatherShield finish. He was getting about $600 last time I saw one Listed on GB.
Don't over look Montana Rifle Co's "American Rifle Series" for a really nice $1k & + for all the other Series in an improved M70 Classic rifle, that is well worth the money IMO. Ron

I would suggest this the 284 brass is expensive and may be hard to find.
I know it would go through a short action.
Why not chamber a gun in 6.5/06 the loads are listed in the latest nosler book.
The 0/6 brass is easy to find and cheaper.
You would still have the same case capacity and performance look at the loads.

A bullet that is .013" larger in diameter would work just as well, and you can find 270 ammunition anywhere.
On the other hand, a 270WSM will do anything that a 6.5x284, a 284, a 6.5-06 or a 270 Winchester will do - and more.
If you really prefer 6.5x284, 284, 6.5-06, 270 Win velocity - just use starting loads out of the book for your 270WSM.
- But there's always a couple of hundred extra FPS available to you with the 270WSM, if you want it.
Using starting loads in a 270WSM makes sense, as you are getting maximum 270 Winchester velocity without pushing the limits of pressure. The 270WSM delivers that while just loafing along.

That's true if you are talking about hunting ammo, but there are better bullet choices in 6.5mm than .277 as far as target shooting is concerned.

It will be shooting berger 140VLD's (BC=0.612) (MV=3050fps) for hunting and target shooting. The best long range/hunting bullet in .270 is a 150 berger (BC=0.531) (MV=2900fps).

spg Will you be able to get that velocity out of a 140 grain bullet? My 6.5-284 is built on a long action. The load that was worked up for my rifle, using 130 Accubonds, is moving at that velocity. The load is warm and the bullet is seated out about as far as it can go. There are no signs of pressure with that load, but I can't shoot that one in my son's rifle (same long action, same make barrel and same builder).

I do not know of any target bullets in 277. - On the other hand, I get outstanding 100 yard accuracy with some of the hunting bullets that are available. In order for 277 to be considered for target shooting, two things would be required: Bullets constructed for the task, and barrels with a more appropriate twist to stabilize those bullets. The heaviest 277 bullets that I've seen are 160 and 180 grains, but they are not designed or intended to be target bullets. Finding a 277 barrel with a nonstandard twist would be like pulling teeth, though of course it could be done.
Kind regards, charlesb

The .270 won't do everything the 6.5 will do. Which is why after I shoot the 100 rounds of .270 (140 SST) that chad loaded for me, my rifle will be rebarreled in 6.5-06.

And that is the reason that the options above and below 270 are better for shooting distance. 6.5mm and 7mm have the option of twist rates and high BC bullets for those twists. Until barrel makers and bullets makers get together, and solve this, the 270 will continue to be left behind by several calibers. It's a shame, too, with all the case capacity the 270 has.

glb, I don't know your barrel length. You should be able to achieve 3050 with the right powder and a 26in barrel or very close to it. I worked up a load for a friend and that's what we were getting, I'll have to ask him what powder I used because I wrote the data on his box for the next time I load for him. His rifle is custom built also.

spg Mine barrel is 24". The hunting load that we developed is 55 grains of RL19 behind that 130. The C.O.L. is 3.150. There might be some more room in the case, but this is the one that is most accurate.

Stick with the most accurate no need to push the pressure limits if it causes loss in accuracy. You can try experimenting with different powders, I know I used H4831 but can't remember how much, I start out at the lowest charge in the book and work up in increments of .2gr's and I seat the bullet kissing the lands

With the 26 inch barrel you might want to try H1000. H4831 works well also with the 140 Bergers
