On the ranch I would rather use my rifle or shotgun than pistol. But if I had to carry a pistol it would probably be a .22 Ruger.

Stainless 5 1/2 inch single six convertible, my brother gave it to me last year. I do keep a 239 SIG in the console but that's for 2 legged varmints off the ranch. Now that the mesquites are out my rifle stays at the house.

Probably wouldn't admit to killing deer with a .22 LR.

Yes sir, that is correct and is OK according to my Game Warden friends.

I only carry a side arm when im running traps or bow hunting on the ground. I shot a 185 lb boar last year with my bow. I was sitting indian style on the ground with nothing between me and him but 5 yards of air. The 45 colt made me feel better, but likely wouldn't have done me any better.

Taurus Judge. Took 13 rattlers the first 4 months I had it. Carried it this past Easter weekend on a hog/turkey hunt and took a hog that just HAD to investigate my decoy at about 20 yards w/ 45 LC lead. Ran about 10 steps before piling up. Two hours later, I took a nice bird w/ the 12 gauge.

I wish I had a ranch to carry on. When on someone else's property though, with their permission, I carry a glock 30.

Right now I carry an M&P 22 for snakes (great little gun and fun/cheap to shoot), but I'm about to upgrade to an M&P 40.

As an extension of the OP's question, what kinds of holsters are you guys using for your ranch hand guns? For my 22, I use a low budget holster. For my 40, I'm considering something like this, but I don't have any experience with this type of holster and I want to make sure it's secure enough for traipsing around the ranch. I also like the cheapo holster for my 22 because it has a slot for an extra magazine.

I don't carry one all the time but when I do it is almost always a 45 ACP (Ruger P97 DC).
