So say you shoot a bird and it's a beauty that you want mounted... And you winged it and it's still alive. How do you dispatch and still keep the bird fresh to mount??

Bite him on the skull until you hear a crunch. It kills them right away.

So I'm not the only crazy one that's good... Been doing exactly that! Was just like wondering if there was anything easier that doesn't damage the bird externally at all. Thanks wal

Bite him on the skull until you hear a crunch. It kills them right away. Not sure I will ever bring myself to do that.

Take a large wing feather and poke it in the back of the head right under the skull, does quick work with minimal damage. Or... Shoot a little better...

Lay it down belly down, put your knee on its back and crush.
That's how I finish all my birds. Better than wringing neck, but you don't get to say you bit a ducks head.

Put it under my arm so that the bird is between my side and my bicep. Squeeze the bird until it goes limp.

lol you can ring its neck without damaging anything... these fellas are serious^ I've mounted several birds with wrung necks. I really bruises the skin making it very likely to have feather slippage. Also make is weak which can result in tearing during the mounting. Do your taxidermist a favor and don't ring necks.

Drowning a duck is a lot harder than it sounds.

Drowning a duck is a lot harder than it sounds. One of the guys I hunt with tried it and could not do it. I'm not sure how long he held it under water but it was a long time. Sucker wouldn't die.

That's how I finish all my birds. Better than wringing neck, but you don't get to say you bit a ducks head. X2 on big birds like geese, divers, sea ducks. Puddle ducks I squeeze the bird in one hand. Thumb and middle finger under the wings and compress the heart. 15 seconds and they are out. Going to switch to this method exclusively. Wringing their neck sometimes leads to complete decapitation before they're dead. Drowning takes forever and you get a waterlogged duck with extra water inside if you've hit a lung. Biting the head leaves them flapping forever and is not very effective unless you bite very deep. I've had birds crawl away who've been bitten and the dog has to retrieve it from the brush.
