I picked up a winchester 1886 38-40 with octagon barrel. It is in above average condition for its age possibly having been reblued at some point in its life. I see values on the net that range from 4000-40000 can anybody point me in the direction of somebody who can give me a realistic value of it?

If it is a 1886, it is not a 38/40, or something is BAD wrong! 38/40 could have been 1873 or 1892. I am not even remembering a 38 cal that an 1886 could have been in, but there may have been one. If it has been reblued, you are probably looking at a value south of the $4000 figure.

There is a Winchester Collectors forum and I'll bet there's someone there who could tell you everything you want to know about that model. It seems to be an awfully slow moving forum, though.

Neat rifle with the pistol grip. Barrel has been cut; that really hurts!

The magazine retaining band is supposed to be about 3 3/8" from the end of the barrel. I don't see one there and what appears to be the band looks to be at the end of the barrel. Unless this is a carbine, but does not seem likely with the octagon barrel. If that band is not where it is supposed to be, the barrel has been cut. How long is the barrel? Also, the front sight looks to be set too far back on the barrel.

If you really want to know more, you can check with the Cody Firearms Museum, they have the old Winchester records and for a fee can send you a factory letter about your gun from model and serial numbers. Their data is not all inclusive but is very large. http://centerofthewest.org/explore/firearms/firearms-records/

Thanks guys. It's a 26in barrel. I'll look at the band when I get home. From pictures on the net I didn't notice anything different other than condition.
