I recently moved the Athens, TX and am interested in hunting javelina this year. For some reason I always wanted to get one or two. Since i just got here, I'm currently without a place to hunt. Anybody got any info on some places I could go after some of these? I'm in Athens which is about 60 miles south of Dallas in Henderson County but I'm not afraid to drive a couple of hrs if need be.

There are places in Northern Texas where Javelina have been 'introduced', but I doubt you'd find a property that would allow you to hunt them. Your best bet (for good populations) is to head South. Some of the best populations exist starting about Encinal (and Southward, also to the West). Check the game laws before going on a hunt. Don't know if you plan to hunt with firearms or archery equipment, but the little critters seem tailor made for bow-hunting, if you are so inclined. https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_w7000_1669.pdf

That red area is where you want to be. Fun stuff. Worth the drive every couple years or so.

Don't know why anyone would want to harvest one really. Stink like a horse mixed with a person with horrible body odor. Meat isn't good unless you doctor the hell out of it. Oh and that map is incredibly out of date and just flat out wrong. El Paso and Hudspeth counties have tons of Javelina!

I don't "harvest" any animal. I kill them. Including javelina. Any you are right. Not much for eating. But coyotes don't eat well. Coons don't eat well. Rats don't eat well. Opossum doesn't eat well. Nutria doesn't eat well. Skunk doesn't eat well . . . shall I go on?

Harvest, kill, whack, smoke, smackdown I don't give a rats a$$ what you call it! Don't spew your misinformation and law breaking on a public forum however. Looks like someone needs to read their outdoor annual and be a responsible sportsman. Javelina in Texas are a game species with a specific season and BAG LIMIT. https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/land/habitats/trans_pecos/big_game/javelina/ The are not Coyotes, coons or possums. If you kill a javelina in Texas you'd better make an attempt to process it! http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PW/htm/PW.62.htm]

For the record, let me say that coon can be quite tasty. As for javelina, if you can cook it and make it tasty, then you are a culinary artist.

I know a guy that slow cooked a javelina in his oven for 8 hours and it turned out pretty good. Just saying!

To answer your question. Lincoln Ranch, Callaghan Ranch, and many more. Do check the game laws and dates!!!!

Actually Blazin I know folks who will eat them. Just like the hogs and ducks I kill. I've killed ten pigs this year. One went in my freezer and most of the others went to friends who eat them. Some folks eat javelina because culturally they are a desired food source and they can prepare them in a method they enjoy. Some folks are in tough places in life and any meat you can provide them is appreciated. Doesn't mean I find them edible. Any more than I do carp. But I retain them and find an appropriate outlet for them. I understand the rules and make a good faith effort to follow them.
However you were the one who questioned why anyone would hunt them. And my answer remains the same. Because it's fun.

Your the one in your post that included them in the same category as yotes, coons and possums Not me. So don't backstroke and twist my statement. Out of the mouth the heart speaks. Seen many a folk even on this forum grouping Javelinas in the same category as varmints. The State of Texas has determined they are clearly not. Again for the record they are a game animal which requires processing the meat and they have a season and bag limit!

Look up Mulie_Mike on this forum. He offers javelina hunts. I've never hunted with him but those that have give reviews that are very positive as you will see.

I was actually just making a statement regarding there are plenty of critters I have taken that I don't eat. And I have eaten muskrat, ground hog, coon, beaver and goose. Doesn't mean I'm gonna eat one for dinner tonight. But I grew up dirt poor and meat was meat and mom made sure our family could eat. We killed it and she cooked it. Doesn't mean it was good or we liked it.

Javalina meat is not that bad. I don't know what you guys are talking about. The Javalina smell bad but the meat does not.

Taste good to me.. Just as good or better than feral hog. Clean it right and don't let people's opinions get in the way.

Is this what he was alluding to? You then got on your high horse and started spouting off game laws that he already knows.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
