I was at my taxidermist yesterday and he showed me this picture of a coyote killed here in VA. He knows the hunter and this individual shot this coyote this year and said it weighed 82 pounds. Apparently he saw this coyote on a railroad track and initially thought it was dog....then two regular sized coyotes joined this one and at that point he shot the first coyote. My taxidermist's brother traps a lot and has taken a 61 pound coyote but this one is suppose to have weighed 82 pounds according to the hunter. Based on the people involved I know this is not an internet hoax and my taxidermist knows the hunter. The hunter isn't sure whether he is going to mount it or just have the hide tanned. I thought this was worth sharing.

Too big to be all coyote. That's either a coy-wolf or a coy-dog. Statistically coy-wolf is more common than coy-dog.

I posted once before, but I'll repeat it again.... the VA Deer Hunters Association published an article claiming that the many of coyotes in the southeast have gray wolf DNA...hence are larger. We never saw coyotes in my area until a few years ago....I've shot 3 but nothing close to the size of this one. Biggest one was maybe 35 pounds. I did have one on my trail camera that I posted that looks pretty big, but not as big as the one in the picture on this post.
They also said that any coyote x dog hybrids would have a tough time surviving since dogs would not tend a den like a coyote so the young would likely not survive.
I know they have red wolves in parts of the Carolinas and my first thought was maybe it's a red wolf because of the coloring. That said, my taxidermist said his brother (the trapper) catches a lot of coyotes this color.
So all I know is that the hunter is holding that coyote pretty close to his body and it looks huge to me.

From the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries (VGIF) website .... for VA average weight of a male 35-45 pounds and can weigh up to 60 pounds. On the PA website they list average weight of males at 45-55 pounds. So obviously bigger her in the east and the attribute that to coyote-wolf hybridization. Below is the text from VGIF.
HISTORY OF THE COYOTE IN VIRGINIA: The coyote is not a native species of Virginia, and was first observed in the very western regions of the Commonwealth in the early 1950s.
DESCRIPTION: Coyotes are about the size and weight of a mediumsized dog. They generally have longer and thicker hair or fur than a dog. Their long black tipped tail is usually bushy and is pointed downward rather than outward or upward. The fur of the coyote in Virginia can vary from blond, light reddish-brown or tan, grayish black, or black with a small white blaze in the center of the chest. The coyote ears are pointed and erect, and the snout is relatively long and slender. The coyote in the eastern United States is typically larger than coyotes in the western United States. Female coyotes weigh on average 30 – 40 pounds, and male coyotes weigh on average 35 – 45 pounds. Coyotes can weigh as much as 60 pounds.

I was gonna say it but somebody beat me to it yesterday.
That's a giant [censored] pup, man. Too big to be 100% coyote for sure, but that looks amazing.

After posting this picture yesterday and reading all the post I called my taxidermist this morning to tell him that if his buddy's dog is indeed a coyote it's probably a world record or close too it.
So here is a little more information.
1. It was shot behind his house (rural area) last deer season near Charlottesville, VA ( Albemarle County )
2. Now this is funny, after he shot it he went home to get his 4-wheeler.....his wife asked him "Did you shoot a deer?" He said "No, a coyote." ...at which point she told him he was a [censored] for needing a 4-wheeler to get a coyote out of the woods. I thought that little story was worth sharing.
3. It weighed 82 pounds even on the house scales.
4. Unfortunately he did not call Virginia Came and Inland Fisheries (VGIF) to verify/view the kill when it was whole.
4. He skinned it and the hide is currently in his freezer.
I asked my taxidermist to see if he could get any more pictures. I also told him to call the guy and make sure he knows what a unique trophy he has. I also suggested he contact VGIF to see if they wanted to DNA it. That's always a double edge sword when you get any Fish & Game involved....so I doubt he will do that.
Whether it's a coyote or a coyote hybrid that thing is huge and unique. BTW, my taxidermist (and his brother the trapper) said that the tail and face definitely have coyote characteristics. Whether it's a hybrid...who can say.
BTW, also verified that my taxidermist's brother caught two coyotes last season that were over 60 pounds...so they do get big here...and I have friends in PA and NY who will tell you stories about huge coyotes they have seen. All this goes back to the fact that coyotes are not a native species here and as they migrated here the researchers claim (via DNA studies) that they hybridized with gray wolves as well as red wolves (in the South)

It looks a lot like a coyote, but it looks a lot like a hybrid. We'll never know. But I'm going with wolf-yote hybrid. That bad boy is a biggin.

it looks like the coyotes head is way in front of the mans feet. Looks like photo trickery to me.
