I am interested in going on a elk hunt in British Columbia and going with a hunting buddy of mine. I am not sure what to expect with 2-1 Guide hunt. Can some explain how it works? Are booth hunters hunting each day or is it one kills first and then you hope that the other gets a shot later in the hunt?
Any help is greatly appreciated! It is a expensive trip to go on and just not sure what to expect!
Thanks

On hunts where I have went that were 2 on 1 guide, we both hunted at the same time. One of us had first choice and if that person did not want to kill that animal then he passed it to the other hunter. I would much rather do a hunt that is 1 on 1 though.

Thanks for the info..I would rather do the 1 0n 1 also but the price difference would make it difficult for both of us

My experience on a 2x1 was me and my buddy traded days. One day I had first choice then the next he did. Sometimes it can work well especially when we saw 2 shooter bulls running together. Most importantly we had a blast even if we both did not connect because one friends success was also the others.

we are doing a 7 day hunt for about $5,000.00 each. We also are looking at buying tags for bear, white tail, mule dear and wolf just in case we see something worth shooting

You would need to ask your guide on his hunting methods. He may allow both to hunt at the same time. One could hunt a large clearing while the other goes with the guide to a different area. Most of the time one person is the shooter for one day then the next day would be yours. Which really just sucks because you may be on a 7 day hunt and only hunt two or three times that week.

It all depends on what is agreed to by the two hunter and the guide. For example you may both go out with the guide and one hunter has the first choice to shoot or not..if he decides not to shoot the other hunter can shoot. Then the roles get reversed. Bottom line it's up to what you and the guide agree on.

If your going all the way there I recommend getting a one on one guide. In my opinion your already spending quit a bit to go so don't cut corners. Unless you can't get a one on one guide.

Thanks Archery or rifle? Archery it works pretty well, because you can cover more area, and caller/guide can get further back

If the price is right and its a Target Rich environment, would bet your fine. I would prefer one on one but make the best of it be safe and have a blast.

A lot of it has to do with the hunt, who you are with, what you are there for.
With my daughters, I am mostly along for the ride. 2x1 is preferred because I want to be with them. Same with being with my buddies on more "social" hunts (pronghorn, caribou, etc.).
Some hunts are "lone wolf". Not because I don't want to see my buddies do well-but because I want to give all of us a better chance to do well. I am not going to spend beaucoup $$ on a sheep/goal/grizzly hunt and not make the very most of limited hunting time-or ask my buddy to do so either. So it's always 1 on 1 for those OIL hunts. I have packed in with a buddy for elk-but we each hunted alone from camp. There is plenty of "buddy" time during travel, pack-in, and at camp.
Elk hunting can fit either category, depending on your desires and/or the game availability where you are hunting. It's a personal thing.
Good luck! You will have a great time however you choose to do it.

I did 2x1 in Africa with my daughter. We basically took turns stalking. Was nice to be able to tag along as support on her hunts to dole out fatherly advice and share in her good fortune. And conversely was neat to have her there when I scored.
On an elk trip that's long enough to provide opportunity for both of you, I'd think this was a good way to go. And having an extra body along to help pack out each others bulls will come in very handy.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

I've done it a few times and it's always worked out well except the first time. That was with a friend who was just too worried about not getting anything, and always wanting first shot, then when he got his animal, whining about me getting one that he liked better then his. I learned that it's not so much about who shoots first, who gets the better animal, it's about being there with somebody you get along with, or somebody who will make the trip miserable. Once you find a good hunting buddy, it really doesn't matter who shoots first or who gets what.
On guided elk hunts, it's not uncommon to split up with one of you on your own in a good vantage point while the other goes with the guide to make something happen, or look in a different area. If you spot it, then you get first call on shooting it or passing. Remember that just because you have a guide, that does not mean he will spot all the game first, or be in the best shape.
One of the worse guides I've ever had was fresh out of guide school and had never hunted elk before. This was in Monatana and over summer, the outfitter runs a guide school. Then he hires some of the students to be guides for the year. Mine was from Iowa and this was his first time in the mountains. He was just about clueless and always wanted to get back to the lodge for dinner. After two days of that, we revolted and took over. We where the last ones back every night, but the only ones seeing animals. We ended up with a fair 5x5 that my buddy hit first, but that I put down. He tagged it and I passed on several spikes after that. Once that bull was on the ground, our guide didn't have a clue how to deal with it. I had to show him how to cut it up and get it into sizable pieces to drag down the mountain.
Good luck, I've always wanted to hunt BC, I've seen some very impressive animals come out of there.
Eddie

This is what i did, i did alot of calling around for my trophy elk hunt and eventually found the outfitter I was going to go with he hunts several units and had no one else in that unit and he did the same price on a 1x1 as 2x1.

Target rich environment like Africa plains game on a two week hunt then 2x1 is okay. Elk 1x1 IMO.

A week in good elk country and you should be okay. A week on heavily hunted public lands would be a different story. Five grand is a lot to pay for a hunt and not have a personal guide, horses or vehicle transportation and good percentage of getting into bulls. Especially if it is a rifle hunt.
