Thinkng live bait mght be frowned on That is what I was thinking but I've also heard of people using live goats to bring in yotes. Either way, if this chicken turns out to be a rooster that we have he is going to get the chop one way or another. Might just use the carcass if live isn't a viable option.

This falls into the SSS category. If it's my chicken, I'll kill it anyway I want, but won't make it public knowledge. It could be fun trying to keep the chicken alive when yotes show up.

While I agree about SSS, this statement on the TPWD website had me wondering if it was legal. They only specifically list using live decoys for migratory game birds as being illegal. Nothing anywhere else regarding any other animals. I also don't see how it would be any different if I had a caged chicken that I was hunting next to vs a chicken coup that a yote tried to get after.....Anyway, here is the TPWD statement. "Decoys may be used to hunt game animals and game birds, except that no person may use live decoys when hunting migratory birds."

Anyone ever used a live chicken to bait coyotes/bobcats? Is it even legal to do it? I put 20 - 30 of them inside a 10x30 fenced in area (wire on top too); It has been working great for last 16 years. Brings in yotes, bcats, coons, possums, and even skunks; from miles around. Town ordinances even allow '...firearm discharge to prevent/stop depredation of livestock&poultry . . . ' Plus we get a bonus - plenty of fresh eggs daily . . .

Have not used it in years, but yes we used live chickens all the time. The trap we have has a separate compartment for the chicken. The coyote or bobcat cannot get to it. When you catch a bobcat (never caught a coyote in it)the chicken is fairly traumatized but not injured.

I'm thinking of hunting the varmints with a rifle, watching the chicken and waiting.

MO +1 Left my pointer in a kennel in the back of my truck while I went to sit over a feeder for a while. Needless to say he wasn't happy about being left behind. He yapped incessantly. It couldn't have been more than 30 minutes before a pack of coyotes started making noise. Totally torqued me because I wanted a pig that nite not a Yote. I slowly made my way back to the truck. At 181 yards I had a clear view of several circling the truck maybe ten yards from it. I killed one that was in front of the truck. I think I have a pic of it. Will try and post. Got it, here is my new coyote call.

Caught a bobcat one night with a rooster in the bait part of the trap, left it set one more night and caught a skunk. That was one traumatized stinking rooster
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch
