I'm wanting to move from .223 to a larger caliber for pig hunting. I primarily hunt over feeders, and do very little spot/stalk hunting. Where I hunt is brushy, so the opportunity to shoot multiple pigs are rare. Trying to decide between the following:
PSA 6.8 upper to change out with my .223 upper $500.00 Ruger American Predator .308 $450.00
I'll be running a suppressor with NV
Which setup would you chose?

Either will work just fine, very different guns. If you are a AR guy get the 6.8 if you are a bolt gun guy get the 308.
308 ammo is easier to find, that is the only real nod.

Running a suppressor get a .300 Blackout upper for your AR.
If you want to go even cheaper just buy a .300 Blackout barrel and replace your .223 barrel. Then well your .223 barrel to help cover the cost of the .300 BLK.

Make sure your night vision is rated to handle .308 if u go with that caliber
Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.

The 6.8 is far superior especially if you reload. I have both a 300 blackout and the 6.8, only consider the black out to be marginally better than the 5.56 after watching many many people hit hogs with it. Like stated above the 6.8's only draw back is finding ammo but it is showing up more and more we bought 6 boxes of hornady 120 sst's this past weekend in a small town gun shop. Make sure your night vision is rated to handle .308 if u go with that caliber ^^^THIS!!! AR10 platforms have come down dramatically over the last year you could get a .308 AR

Plus you can find plenty of 6.8 online... http://ammoseek.com/ammo/6.8mm-remington/Hornady?ikw=sstI run 6.5 Grendel that is pretty close to 6.8 in just about all parameters. The performance you will get from 6.8 (especially from Hornady SST ammo, which I also use) will be outstanding and the 6.8 will produce much less recoil than the .308. Two years ago, I hunted mostly with a .308 using SSA ammo with 150 gr. Nosler Accubond bullets. Last year, I hunting mostly with 6.5 Grendel using SST. Not once did I ever consider that the 6.5 wasn't doing the job I needed as compared to .308.

Doesn't the 6.5 Grendel have about 300 ft-lbs more knockdown than a 6.8? Seems like I have watched videos on both the 6.8 and 6.5. Seems like more hogs are running after being popped with the 6.8. Any feedback on the two is appreciated. Thanks

I have a 7.62x39 upper so I'm partial to that one. I deer hunt with it and have never had a problem.

In AR platform, I use 6.8x43 barrel from AR Performance mounted in AP upper. I use a Pulsar N750 on one and a Photon 5X on the other. EACH one took over 30 pigs in 2014.
If you like to watch pigs run off, by all means get a 300BO. That Silvers Bullet is magic right up until you use it on a pig. I was an early adaptor of the 300BO and so glad to unload it. It is a cheap conversion for a reason - cheap results. If you shoot people, deer or other soft skinned animals, it's OK.
Don't have a 308 so can't speak to that but think it would work nice against pigs. Just don't want the extra weight and expense of NV to live on it.

DO NOT get a Ruger American!!! Biggest piece of junk I have ever shot. The bolt is horribly rough and the bolt has a plastic piece that is held in place by a little spring. A guy brought one out to my ranch to shoot. The chamber was bored wrong and would not take the round without scarring the case. Once fired the bolt could not be retracted and a rod had to be inserted down the barrel and tapped to open the chamber. The bolt broke on the 3rd shot.
There has been a saying around for many years about not buying a gun unless it costs at least a week and a half worth of salary... A cheap rifle is a poor quality gun.

Listen to your Captain!! Low quality usually means disappointing results... I love my Spikes tactical 6.8... Just look around ammo is online most places

I'm going on my first Hog Hunt in April. Im using my 223. However I will probably buy a 6.8 upper before I go just to have. Options are always fun, plus with the upper, its like I bought another gun! I've read nothing but good things about the 6.8. So I am excited to get one.

I think the 6.8 will work well for your intended use.

My new hog gun is the Weatherby Vanguard S2 in .308 and use the Razor XT ammo from Winchester. Before that I used either my Tikka T3 in .243 or 30-66 with good results. I also have a .223 AR with a thermal scope that is mainly a coyote gun, but thinking about using it for hogs in the future.
My guess is that the .308 will be a much better round than the 6.8 for hogs....especially for any hits that are not in the neck or head.
