This post is an effort to shed light (pun intended!) on the big differences in x-sight reported NIGHTIME ONLY shooting ranges. SAFE shooting distance means max. range that the animal and terrain is clearly identified so that a clean, ethical and safe shot can or could of been taken. PLEASE INCLUDE THE BELOW INFO!! - X-SIGHT used (3X/5X) and firmware # - Magnification / zoom used - Light amplification setting (low/med/high) - type/make of IR light used - night sky conditions- full or partial moon,heavy/light cloud, etc. - terrain cover/type - dry grass, green vegetation, scrub, desert ,snow , etc. - what animal type was in the crosshairs - the range / yardage the shot was made at or could have been made at - pictures and / or video is good but PLEASE give the above info - any other info - picture lag on moving animals, humidity, etc.

there must be someone getting to actually shoot at animals at night with their x-sight on a rifle instead of just reprogramming it in the living room!!!!!

If I can get some decent weather up here this weekend, I plan on mounting the X-sight and doing some nighttime yote hunting. Will post video if I make it out.

If I lived in a town that actually had that service, I would do it bud.

Sow at 100 yards 0430
X-sight 5-18 with the 850IR that comes with it. IR focus to pin point beam
Green Screen with brightness of 4
Missed a raccoon at 150 yards (shot low - all me) but I had a great picture on the x-sight. Picked him up about 175 yards but he looked very small at 5X.
and doggone I forgot to take pictures or video!

and doggone I forgot to take pictures or video! This is a problem MANY of us have experienced with various forms of recording devices for hunting. You are not alone, my friend.

5x .228 version Green/Brightest setting Many IR lights made for digital NV. -5 degrees, snow on the ground and snowing intermittently. Didn't get a shot at anything, but I couldn't see past 50yards after being out for about an hour's time. The brightness in the view seen through the scope degraded over time. I changed batteries and it had no effect. One thing to note(and I posted this in the .228 firmware topic), is that the recorded video taken was bright, even though I could barely see anything in the viewfinder. After I switched back to the .200 firmware, the view is bright in both the viewfinder and recorded video. I'm going to give it another test this weekend.

/MKL My son wanted some night vision for our upcoming hog hunt. I bought the 5x because that was all Cabelas had in stock and I had enough points on my Cabelas credit card to almost get it for free. I've been playing around with the 5x and wish it had a larger field of view. Now Cabelas has the 3x so that's what we ordered for him to use. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week. and I can do a comparison.

5X18..228 Firmware Green Setting, with brightnes at 4 Used the 850 IR Included with the scope Clear, Starry night w/ No moon Open Fields with grass and some small scrubs. Boar at 100 yards, in the left ear and out the right. I had a good shot, clear and visible sight thirty minutes after the sun went down below the trees. After shooting the boar and still scanning around for others for thirty minutes or so the screen did dim, I did increase the brightness of the scope to the high setting but made no difference, played with the illuminator and again no difference.. When I finally shut the scope off I could see 100 yards but not enough for a good kill shot in my opinion. 60 to 80 yards maybe. Dang...and I commented on another thread that the .200 was too bright and no adjustment on the illuminator, I could almost count pine needles at 200 yards or more with the .200 firmware. I don't have another hunting trip planned any time soon so will fool with this 5x18 some more and of course watch all of the guys comments.

first part of video 174 - standard settings medium etc - rabbit at 70m quite a old video now, was the first day I had a unit second part, think its 200 - medium settings Night Master 800 Ranges of distance out to 435m can see fence battons and the shape/eye of a rabbit Rabbit and cat at 100m+ - good images to show it is a cat (domestic at that, house beyond the tree line) I have plenty of images of deer out to 400m, but we forgot to focus the unit, duh (was mates first night out with it; need to read the manual more ...) - very shootable

GREAT INFO GUYS - keep the nighttime shooting experiences /ranges coming!!!!! it is obvious the .200 firmware is better at night than the latest .228!!! however, the unit dimming and staying dim after 1 hr use is an issue that needs to be addressed by atn

I tested mine with a Nightmaster X-Searcher IR tonight. Could see the detail on a barn over 500yds away. I'd more than happy to shoot out to 200yds with mine. I'm on .228 firmware and had old batteries in. I haven't experienced the dimming after an hour of use as I don't keep mine on that long.
