1. Decide on a general area that you would like to hunt 2. Go to the county tax assessor's office for that county and get copies of the land plat maps for that area (They will make you copies for a minimal fee} 3. Go online to Taxnetusa.com and do a search (its free) using the parcel id or Geo. number listed for the property you are interested in. This will give you the owners name and address. 4. Call information and get their telephone number. 5. Make the call. All they can do is say no. 6. Don't give up keep searching different properties and making phone calls
I leased two good 140 acre tracts in East Texas several years ago. One landowner lived in Arkansas the other in Weatherford. My older brother still has one tract leased and kills nice bucks there every year. I had the best success targeting landowners who lived far away from the property and you will find that a many of them do.

That's an interesting strategy. I'm gonna have to give that a try.

Isn't there something easier than step 2? I think in google maps the property boundaries are now shown and if you click on a property it will give you the street address.
If you go to the tax assessor's website for that county and enter the address, won't it give you the owner's name?

It will give you the mailing address of the owner, which will be different than the physical address of the property. Unless the owner lives on the property. I always had to enter the Geo# or parcel ID to get the owners name and mailing address, But feel free to modify the steps anyway you want to. I figured this out on my own and I have no doubts that it can be improved upon

just have to meet people. everyone comes into contact with a certain number of folks. it will surprise you how many folks own a little or large piece of land somewhere there's a bjillion parcels in texas...someone owns each of them.
be social. present yourself as a responsible individual who will respect and take care of the property. offer whatever you can in return. don't expect it to be free. and just be appreciative.
do package hunting until you find something more permanent. I took my wife on a lot of weekend package hunts until we found something more permanent. was a great time. lotta great deer (does/spikes/hogs) lotta really nice folks and nice ranches. its not canned or commercialized hunting. there's tons of folks out there with incredible hunting camps who will sell a chance to hunt to help cover their feed and expenses. you won't get to shoot a buck...or not a big one...obviously the landowner keeps those for his own hunting...and or sells them at a higher price. but who wouldn't do the same if he were fortunate enough to own something like that.
I'd think it better to meet someone socially than to cold call them out of the county records. I work for a CAD...a reasonable number of folks sorta take offense to the idea that their contact information is publicly available...and that someone is researching it to solicit them. its there and its legal...but I wouldn't think it would start you on the right foot.

I put a lease wanted post on Craiglist of all places looking for a year round small family lease in the area. I may have just gotten lucky, but it worked. I've been on 100 acres north of Loving in Young County now for the past 8 years. The landowner has never raised the rates on me in this time once and we have a great relationship. I may indeed buy the land from him in a few years when he retires.
The first year I met a couple of hunters at the hotel in Graham that I stayed at - they hunted another place outside of Graham but stayed at the same hotel. Long story short, I ended up going in with them too on 240 acres in Jack County south of Bryson. Have hunted there the last 5 years. So meeting and getting to know hunters in the area works too.

This is really nice information. Erich, I am inclined to agree with your approach. My brother and I are looking for a lease to hunt on and to take the kids as well. We'd like somewhere convenient between DFW and Austin as we are in different cities. How much should we expect to pay for a typical "weekend package hunt"?
Thanks.
