So as I posted in another thread I went on my first deer hunt and as God would have it I got my first doe. The one thing I realized was I need a good sharp thin knife for the well you know, rectal area gutting. I have a big buck knife that did great everywhere else.

Break the pelvic bone with your buck knife, step on both legs and pull up on the tail. After that everything will pull out smoothly. Don't overthink gutting a deer. Watch someone who has gutted hundreds and you can be through in 2 minutes and only get your fingertips bloody.

Limb loppers for all bone.

I admit that I can't be finished in two minutes and only get my fingertips dirty, but I don't use a saw, I don't break the pelvis or any other bones, and I only use loppers to remove the legs a little more quickly and to sever the vertebrae when removing the head. A sharp knife with a 4" blade will do everything you need, including removing the hindquarters at the ball of the joint.

I got a bird and trout knife from Jason Fry on here and it is an awesome knife, very thin and very light. Works great for that part.

A fillet knife is excellent to remove everything from the pelvic area. I used one of them replaceable blade knives this past weekend, it did a great job. I also tend to separate the bones at a joint, I never have to cut or break a bone. I used loppers for a while but the sharp bones would poke through bags.

Havalon works great for precision cutting and limb loopers/sawzall for getting through the pelvic bone.

Fast paced gregarious society forgets the healing power of solitude. It's worked thousands of years. Casting a line/gazing into a campfire/sitting in a blind after a long week is medicine for the soul. The serenity and peacefulness of it all is majestic.
