I am looking at these two rifles and am caught in the middle. I have been wanting a rifle with a heavy barrel for a while and have kinda settled on these two for looks and price. The howa has the laminate stock which is more eye catching, and i like its looks better, but i am not sure that there are many options for trigger upgrades like the 700. I want my trigger to be between 1.5-2 lbs max. Any advice is appreciated, i am just thinking the 700 has many more future options if i choose to fix it up later

Had a Howa exactly like your talking about with a timney in it. Probably one of the most accurate rifles I ever owned. Downside was you needed a wheelbarrow to carry that heavy booger!!!

My son had an idea for the really heavy bolt guns... It looks like a civil war cannon carriage. His other great idea was tactical butt-paint, so snipers won't spot your shiney hiney while you are doing your business in the woods with your tactical toilet paper. The laminated stocks are a bit heavy, but that's not always such a bad thing.
Kind regards, charlesb

I'd pass on both of them and get the Tikka instead. I have no interest in Remington 700's or in real heavy rifles.

Of the two choices the OP gave, I'd take the Howa. Timney makes a trigger that will do what you want and the rifles are known to be accurate. The laminate stock will add weight and strength to the entire rig. you don't say whether you'll be using the rifle for target, varmint, hunting or just shooting to shoot.
Should you decide to re-barrel the Howa, it can be done, but, as you noted, not quite as many after-market goodies to play with. But, in my mind, you probably won't need it too much.

Tactical butt paint. Let me know how that one works out for him. Lol I told him that a dip job would be better than the usual masking tape and rattle can method. Lots of patterns available. I hear that the Howa/Weatherby Vanguard action is an older Sako design. It may be a bit heavier than the ones made from bar stock but it's also much stronger, beds more solid, and is light-years ahead when it comes to handling the torque when you touch off a round. My feeling about aftermarket stuff is that the more aftermarket stuff you find for a particular design - the more it probably needs it to work right. You know how it goes. - The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

There are plenty of aftermarket parts for the howa. Anything you would want to do to a 700 you can do to a how you just don't have fifty options for one thing.

It will be used for blind hunting mainly. Wouldnt mind getting into long range shooting and hunting one day, but i am thinking the howa and laminate stock would be too heavy to carry around since it weighed a ton. Thoights? I have had a very difficult time locating a tikka with a heavy barrel anywhere around here. My uncle shoots one and i like the gun, but really am stuck on a heavy barrel since i dont have one.

I prefer the Remington. There are many options to customize it to your preference.

Do you want a light rifle or not? Typically the main savings in weight is the barrel contour. You don't have to have a heavy barrel to shoot distance. You do need one for long strings of repeated fire. You can always get a T-3 Lite, which is in fact a light weight rifle, and rebarrel it with a higher quality barrel that has any contour you want.

I own a sps tactical in 308 and put a new stock on it. I love this gun but it's heavy. It will shoot sub moa groups all day with factory ammo. I have stretched it out to 500 yards with no problem. However this gun very seldom goes hunting with me. I normally take the ruger scout because it will perform almost just as good out to 300 yards and it is much lighter. If I'm hunting a place where my shot is less than 100 yards, I take the 77/357. I love this gun.

I would pass on the remington. All that recall mess and not doing anything about it for so long. I won't support a company like that.
I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.
