Am thinking of a new heavy-barrel 223 for a range gun. It doesn't have to be cheap or expensive, just good.
I'd appreciate suggestions and recommendations. - What have you had good luck with?

I have the Tikka T3 Varmint rifle, and it's awesome! With an 8" twist, you can run the heavier bullets.

The Tikka T3 Varmint looks good, I've noticed that Boyd's makes two styles of stocks for it, I tend to lean toward the Varmint Thumbhole design. Bud's doesn't have The T3V in stock right now, so I don't have a clue about the price. Everybody can leave Remington off of the suggestion list. - If somebody gave me one, it would be sold or traded off at the first opportunity. The bolt head is brazed on, too.

We have a Tikka T3 varmint for the EXACT reasons then some. I found the rifle to be everything i wanted and more. If i seem enamored they this rifle, then I am.
We shoot this thing bone stock except for Tally rings one piece rings and a Nikon scope. My wife will tell you this is a big deal as I obsessively modify things sometimes. it shoots this cheaper 55gr hornady (comes in a 50pk) well and it shoots many of the heavier bullets really well.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

Nothing against Tikka's, I think they are good rifles, but also check out the Savage model 12 varmint series. They all offer .223 as a chambering and would all be good range rifle candidates.

Somebody brought this bolt in, wanting me to re-braise or weld it. - I advised the guy to send the gun to Remington, not wanting to be caught up in liability issues over trying to fix a cheap piece of crap. Geeze, even the Savage Axis is a better engineered rifle than the Remington M700.

Yeah, how does such a crappy design last for 60 years and end up in the hands of elite marksmen around the world I will never understand.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Yeah, how does such a crappy design last for 60 years and end up in the hands of elite marksmen around the world I will never understand. There's sucker born every minute. The M700 is designed with one idea in mind... Cheap to manufacture, then sell at the same price as a quality design. The whole thing is made out of bar stock. They ought to cost 300 bucks or so, no more, but... There's a sucker born every minute.

I used to have one of those a few years ago. It was a very good firearm, but I found that the scope rings end up being awfully close together on the tiny action, which limits which scopes you can use. Eye relief on many scopes put the focal point way back on the stock, so you had to position your head kind of funny in order to get a sight picture. I liked the trigger quite a bit. The gun was accurate, but I got tired of not being able to get a good position on the stock and had to let it go. With a different scope that had less eye relief, it might have worked out better. It was swapped off for an AR15, a dubious trade at best. I like the CZ 527 Kevlar, but want something full-sized this time around. The stock was really outstanding.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion, and similarly entitled to scan on past anything that they do not find to be interesting or useful.
That's what makes the mop flop.
Today I saw a heavy-barreled 223 that really had me interested, a Winchester 1885 high-wall with a 28" tapered octagon barrel, that weighs 8.5 pounds before you put the scope on... But boy is that thing pricey!
I wonder if my wife would notice if some of her jewelry came up missing?

Tikka and Savage for a bolt gun. One that I think would surprise most on here is the H&R bull barreled handi-rifle. I had one I stupidly traded off with a 2.25 lb trigger and put anything inside an inch. I didn't reload the 5.56/223 at the time and the best factory ammo I found put 5 shots inside .5".

I looked at the Weatherby Vanguard varminter, and was not too sure about the 22" barrel and the finish. Then I looked at Bud's gun shop and saw a Howa stainless barreled action with a 24" bull barrel in .223 for around 500 bucks. Boyds has a laminated thumbhole stock for the bull barreled short action Howa in sky blue for 99 bucks, so for around 600 I could have something about like I'm looking for.
I'll keep looking but right now the Howa is very tempting.

Dunno about the thumbhole in blue (just me), but a stainless varmint Howa for $500 is a Best Buy IMO. The triggers are nicely adjustable too, if you carefully follow the guidelines.

I have had the Savage heavy barrel in .223, most, if not all come in a slow twist, which will not shoot heavier bullet, sold it for that reason, found the model 12 n 22-250 w/1-9 that will shoot the 70gr VLD, that will shoot lights out.

I still haven't heard anyone say any negativity about Howa.
