Hey folks. My kid got drawn for the hunt at Old Sabine Bottom, but I've heard it's not very good hunting, especially when rain is involved. He's really looking forward to going out this weekend and camping, doing some hunting and fishing, and just enjoying the outdoors. I was thinking of going to either Caddo Grasslands, Davy Crockett, or Sam Houston. I always hunt at LBJ, so I was wanting somewhere different, plus somewhere we can hunt with rifles. What do you guys think would be the most fun out of those places? Any help is appreciated.

With kids, I like taking them to Sam Houston, but going squirrel and rabbit hunting rather than deer. In my experience, they have a better time. There are some nice camping areas in the National Forest or you can camp at Huntsville State park. Maybe catch a few catfish while your there!

Report on OSBWMA. its had some rain resently. would check your booklet ta see if it got a gun hunt going on. for deer its archery only unless draw hunt. unless they changed it this year. haven't payed the $48.00 for the permit. the rifle hunts are the hog hunts after deer season ends. their may be shotgun muzzleloader rim fire squirrel hog hunts, again don't have the booklet. Crockett & Houston may have the rifle deer hunts. best wishes. I got cheap posts

Ask around on Texas bow hunter website. a lot of those guy public hunt, should be able to give some advice. Usually a ton of does on the side of the road, HWY 7 (at night). If there's doe, then should be bucks around, but I'm not real familiar with area.

Try to get a compartment as far east as possible, hike the Beaver Trail, take a couple of folding stools and when you find a good looking spot sit there for an hour or two,try to keep the young'un as quiet and still as possible(I know, easier said than done,LOL) If you feel like it ease on thru the woods a little further and repeat the process. You should be able to at least kill a doe. Might want to take a pop-up if you dont think you'll be able to keep the young'un still. I wouldn't bother with Davy Crockett or Caddo this late in the season.

Colt is OSBWMA your main place to hunt? I've been thinking about checking out Smith county for a while. Me and the fiancé have been wanting to check out Tyler State Park for some camping as well.
