Looking back over my reloading records, I've come to the conclusion that I've never been able to make H414/W760 shoot well with anything. Well, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but I've tried it in a reasonable number of cartridge combinations and there's always been something that worked better. Am I missing something?

It depends on what caliber and bullet combination you are shooting. What calibers and bullets, and what powder charges have you tried?

.300 ICL (basically a .300 Wby) 165 hornady interbond w760 70.0 .243 WSSM 80 gmx w760 42.0 ( I'm pretty sure I tried the 105 grain Speer bullet in my WSSM, too) .22-250 52 hornady target 38.0 .300 SAUM 150 TTSX w760 64-65.0 .300 SAUM 180 Speer GS 58.0 H414 (not horrible) 9.3x62 286 hornady 55.0 H414
I also recall testing my .300 WM with H414 and the original Barnes 180 X bullet; but those were twitchy anyway. I believe there were a number of other loads tested that I just didn't bother to record, as I considered them failures. These were the numbers I had scrawled in my notebook; nobody should use them without verifying them against a modern load book.
I'm sure there's nothing wrong with w760/h414 as everyone else in the shooting world seems to use it with perfect satisfaction, and the next load I test with it will probably be very accurate. I just wanted to see whether there was something about the powder that everyone knew except me.

had a good load for a 243 with 85gr partitions with 414. That is the only rifle I have tried that powder in.
7828 is the powder I have never been successful with. Last time I tried it was in a 300WBY and was getting bad pressure signs with starting loads. Pulled those bullets and switched to H1000 and worked up a good load without issues. The 7828 became fertilizer.

Good H414 loads? Got a 270 T3 that shoots a max compressed load of H414 under 130gr old style "Red Box" FBSP blem's all into the same hole at 100 yards IF I do my part. Basically the NBT bullet but with a lead tip I'm told. Bought 3-400 at the time and shoulda doubled+ that but who knew. I bought 'em really cheap to plink with at $14 100ct on the last run I ever saw of them in SPS. Ron

Layne Simpson wrote years ago about the myth of "Pet Loads." His writing included three exceptions to this "myth." One was his 243 Win load of 42.0 grains of H414 with a 95 or 100 grain bullet; which, he said, shot very well in just about every rifle he had tried. I have found the same results with this particular load.

I just wanted to see whether there was something about the powder that everyone knew except me. Gosh, I've had incredible accuracy with it in my .223 and .22-250! It's really the go to powder for those two for me. During my load work up on my .22-250 had two .19, center to center, three shot groups with it.

Because WW760 is a ball powder, I use magnum primers more often, especially in loads of around 40 grs of powder, or heavier. Syncerus might get more consistent results with a hotter primer.
That said, WW760--for me--is usually a jack of all trades but a master of very few. I can generally get more velocity and better accuracy with other powders in most applications. Where it shines is in high volume loading because it meters so well. My go-to .22-250 PD load uses 760 behind the 52 Sierra HP or 50 Nosler BT.

Ironically enough, I shot some 63 grain Sierra semi-pointed bullets out of my .22-250 today, backed by W760, and the accuracy was excellent.
Theres a moral here somewhere, but I can't quite figure it out ...
