I am not a complainer usually, but this weekend was too much.
You know what really grinds my gears.. My neighbor across the road from our ranch in Rule Texas came into our gate and stopped me before I could get to the cabin after the hunt. He confronted me and said "y'all know we aren't shooting any young deer in this area. We need to get everyone on board yadadada."
I am all about game management but... Don't EVER tell me what I need to do on MY property. The thing that really bothers me about this, is the fact that he acts like he needs to tell me. We have 5 hunters that have been hunting for 20+ years. I think we get it at this point. Plus, my brother is in the navy and gets to hunt once every 5 years or so, I think it's safe to say he can shoot whatever he darn well pleases. I think this whole deer management thing has some people overthinking hunting and the outdoors in general. It's hard to just have a good time sometimes.

I agree, its reached a point that whitetail hunting is really no longer fun to me either.
On one side of the spectrum its "we are gonna shoot whatever we want (which is usually the first young buck with antlers) and you have a pasture devoid of any bucks older than 3 years old. any shot at a wall hanger is nil.
on the other end is the micro managed, deer has to be video taped and approved by a panel before you can shoot at it. even the does have harvest guidelines. Hunting this pasture is just as bad as hunting the other pasture because any deer you shoot you are scared to death of doing something wrong you won't even really enjoy it..
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

"cull buck" or "management buck" have to be the most nebulous, contentious terms ever discussed around a campfire.

"cull buck" or "management buck" have to be the most nebulous, contentious terms ever discussed around a campfire. In my area it's a term used to justify shooting whatever was shot.

"cull buck" or "management buck" have to be the most nebulous, contentious terms ever discussed around a campfire. lol, I agree. there are two classes of bucks....the ones you want to reach maturity and breed and the ones you don't. is pretty much that simple

You probably have more restraint than myself, I am sure that I would have flipped out on the guy and told him to mind his own business, just not in such nice terms. I am a believer in waiting until a deer matures to harvest them, but If its my property, nobody besides the state laws will dictate my actions.

Shoot whatever you want, as long as you call it a cull.
I like shooting young bucks just to watch the pro hunter wannabes get all wound up about it.

I agree with all of the above posts. But I have told the neighbors that WE won't shoot does until the population reaches CC. It's been 15 years and we are still well below CC. I would NEVER, EVER tell someone what they can or cannot shoot on THEIR property. It might just backfire, and they shoot anything that walks out. As far as your Brother goes, he has EARNED the right to shoot whatever legal deer that he wants. My 2 cents.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I've been on a lease where we had a hunter "deer shooter" who didn't even like deer meat. He'd go out and shoot does and just let them rot, or donate them. (Let them rot = let them sit outside for 6-7 hours before bringing them back to camp in the heat. I considered it rotten meat at that point). He would complain if anyone would shoot anything under a 16" spread, even if the deer was over 5 years old. His comment, imagine what it would look like next year. Heck, the only thing he wanted was the horns of the deer, and he refused to eat any meat from the deer. He'd complain to all the other hunters for deer that they would take because they wanted the meat. He went so far to demand people text him pictures of deer they shot when he wasn't there. Remember this is a paid hunter, not a lease manager.
This hunter, rather "Deer Shooter", even called the game warden and escorted the warden to the properties next door so that he could convince the neighbors not to shoot bucks unless they had a spread over 16". He did this to three of the four neighbors of the lease. To his surprise, none of the neighbors followed suit and shot what they wanted. He then wondered why someone would sneak onto our lease and vandalize stuff.
Needless to say, I didn't stay on this lease and left for better hunting conditions.

Antler size and antler envy will make people do crazy things...telling a neighbor what they can or can't shoot is one of those. Many leases are no different. Some are designed that way and are managed. Take it or leave it, but I can understand it there. Dealing with neighbors isn't even on the same level.

My response when that happens (and it has happened a few times in the last 25 years) is "Let me know when the high fence starts going up". I always get a puzzled look. "You know, that high fence you're going to build to start managing. Because otherwise, your plan ain't gonna happen here. Have a nice day".
That generally ends the conversation.

Mr. Turner: Save it buddy! This about sums it up. I go out and don't even wear camo or scent spray 99% of the time. When I see something I like, it gets shot. I try not to overthink hunting either. I tagged out this year, so I clearly am doing something right.

People tend to go overboard on everything at times and think "since we do things this way, everyone should"!!! I shoot older mature animals but I won't tell someone else what they should shoot!!! Its bad enough during bow season, that I have to wait until a mature buck that comes out of the woods at 10yds from me, turns to look at me so I can make sure he's 13in!!!

Whitetail are a renewable resource, with current game laws they will never be extinct so I shoot what I want period. The first thing I would do is knock down a couple nubbin bucks and send the pics to that neighbor with a caption that says "tomorrow's trophies today". That's what I always say when I knock down a one year old. I'm so tired of the managment, how old is he crap it makes me wanna shoot spotted fawns. I usually shoot the first five legal deer I see if I can get an arrow in em.

My point of view has been this. While there are people who are after the biggest horns possible, let the other hunters "Buck Out" as soon as they can. Once they Buck out, you won't see them the rest of deer season. This happens 80-90% of the time. You'll have the lease all to yourself and the "Big Boy" you've been after will be all yours.
Its called deer hunting. Ones man's trash is another man's trophy. The best attitude to have is if someone brings a deer into camp, congrats are in order and make them feel good about their choice in deer. There is no taking the deer back. For god sakes, its a freaking deer and most people pay good money to hunt, let them hunt.
Give you an example. I personally don't like shooting yearlings. However if my hunting partners shoot one, it would not bother me one bit. They pay a equal share to be on the same lease as me, and they have the rights to hunt that lease the way they want. As long as the deer is legal within the county it was taken, I have absolutely no problems with it. If my hunting partners ask my opinion, I will tell them, "This is my opinion, but you can do what you want.... <insert my opinion>."
Now If I bought a ranch, put up a high fence, purchased deer and placed them on said ranch, then I have the right to tell people what deer you can shoot and not shoot. But on a low fence place, unless you get every ranch within a 5 mile radius of you to do the same thing (Which will be impossible), your management ideas wont work. The deer will jump the fence and will get shot by your neighbors, get hit by cars, get killed by predators, etc.. A buck can travel a 5 mile radius during the rut looking for does, and do you really think everyone within that five mile radius will be willing to let them walk?
I'm not against trophy hunting, I like shooting big deer like everyone else. I'm tired of "Trophy Hunters" trying to tell everyone how to hunt. Remember Ones mans Trash is another Mans Trophy.

I have never told anyone how to hunt, where to hunt, what to kill or how to take care of/manage their own land unless they asked me my opinion on what I would do in their situation. I take care of what I can on my side of the fence.

No problem with either method. Agree 100% with OP. As far as leasers go, just make sure everyone's clear on management principles that will or won't be practiced.
Now, if that were my neighbor on my low fence ranch, I'd probably have some koosies made with "My Ranch My Rules" on them and send them to him for Christmas.
