For everyone that chooses neck shots on deer, what part of the neck do you aim for? The base of the neck toward the body, middle of the neck or closer to the head?
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

I go for base of the neck if I can get a clean shot. All the ones I've shot there were DRT

I don't shoot neck shots anymore. I have seen a lot of deer killed with the shot but also have seen to many deer that were wounded with the shot that was only off a little and they missed the spine/neck bone. I shoot all hi-point of the shoulder shots now.

Small margin for error on a neck shot-like stx said, it's easy to wound one. If you just have to anchor a deer and have a DRT, use the high-shoulder shot. Personally, I try to shoot all mine behind the shoulder in the heart/lungs.

I used to take only neck shots. Now I shoot body shots some time and neck shots for the close easy shots. The last 2 deer I shot at feeders were about 80-90 yards solid rest and they weren't jumpy I aim wherever the crosshairs settle on the deer, sometimes its right below the jaw sometimes its just a few inches in front of the shoulder.

A deer has to be 30 yards or less (which some might call bow range) for me to take a neck shot. And even then, it has to be the only shot available on a deer that appears apt to wind me being so close. And there has only been one such case in all my 40+ years of hunting them.
And like others here, I aim for the middle of the lower neck to break the spinal column.

I shoot all my doe's in the neck (22-250) I try to shoot the top 3rd of the neck.

Base of neck shot with 7mm mag at 85 yards. She was facing me when I took the shot, thus the rear exit.

I'll take another slant on this....some have stated based on distance, I also determine based on the terrain. I hunt in a couple of places in Miss where it is very snarly and swampy - if you absolutely need to drop him at broadside or quartering away I like the base of the neck, quartering to you I like the clavicle.

That's probably driven by the margin of error for a neck shot is less than half that for a heart and lung hit.

I don't shoot big deer and I shoot deer to eat so all I shoot is the neck. If I can't get a good shot I don't shoot.

Stopped doing neck shots after hitting one just a tad off high and had to chase her for 200 yards before getting another shot on her. All the damage the bullet did was mess up the muscle that held the head up. Deer kept tripping over it's head. Since then I put a round in the 'armpit' on broadside shots and on any angle shot try and take at least ONE shoulder out. The amount of meat messed up on a shoulder shot is a lot less than the amount of meat messed up on an un-found animal. Besides, I prefer that my tracking chores be 3' straight down.

I find it amusing how some will try to defend chance shots at the head and neck by saying they don't want to lose meat. Not a person here is that dependent on deer as a food source. Besides, if securing the meat is truly important, common sense calls for a shot with the largest margin of error.
Just admit you're stroking your ego and be done with it.

I shot a spike buck in the neck opening weekend. Stroking my ego had absolutely "0" to do with it. You put a hi shoulder shot on a deer and you have a bloody mess of two legs part of the backstraps and bloodshot in the ribs... I know most people take the straps tenders and 4 legs and let it go at that... and I bet a lot of people plow them through both front shoulders leave the front legs as blown up and only take the back legs straps and tenders. We take the 4 legs backstraps tenders flank meat off the sides of the ribs, cut the meat out between the ribs and as much as we can off the neck. I shot that deer in the neck and lost a chunk of meat the size of a grapefruit that I bet 90% of the people don't use anyway. I had all clean legs backstraps and ribs without any of the red bloodshot gooey stuff all over them and loaded with bone chips and led fragments.
Call it what you want but ego had zilch to do wit hit. If you can put 3-5 shots under a quarter at 100 yards no reason you cant put 1 in a vital spot in a deer's neck at a shorter distance.

I have missed for sure, but ive never been one of those guys that came back to camp and told some tale about how a deer jumped out from in front of a bullet or pulled its head up etc. At the ranges I would consider a neck shot the deer is either hit or missed before you even realize what happened after you squeeze the trigger. If my deer are nervouse and jumpy and im trying to shoot one of them then chances are I am nervouse and jumpy too and would take a quicker shot behind the shoulder.

I've only taken one neck shot in 40+ years, and it was on a nice eight point that stopped less than 15 yards away. With only his head and neck being visible with the vitals hidden by a tree, he appeared quite ready to bolt with such a short distance between us. Thankfully, the shot was a lethal one.

Tripping over its head????? I dont take many neck shots, but that little story has me convinced never to take another neck shot.

Seen deer like this a few times that were "clean misses" since they did not hit the ground.
