Depends, if it's to a place I know is pretty solid with ducks or geese I'll drive 75-100 miles for a regular type hunt, up to 150-200 for a sure thing hunt. Having said that, I'll drive 100 miles in a day or more just scouting locally.

I put extra effort into hiding myself and putting out a good decoy spread. This combined with proper calling allows me to only shoot at birds within 40yds. If I do things right, I get plenty of shots within this range and don't need to take longer shots. If birds are outside of this range, my efforts are applied to getting them closer, not to pulling the trigger.
If I cannot get them close, I'm either not in the correct location or have screwed something else up. Again, I work to correct my errors, not to seeing how far out I can kill one.
I shoot plain steel loads (not hevi-shot, or bismuth), #3 Kent 1 1/4oz. IC factory choke tube. SBE.

I like them real close, I don't take any of the Hail Mary shots, I treat my ammo like it is expensive. I would rather go home with a box of shells than take improbable shots.

I would say 30 yards and 40 yards at the max You pellet them at a longer distance and they will fly away and die .And to me that aint right And I use #2 shot also

if you can't make out whether it's a hen or a drake- it's probably too far and going too fast. if I take a 40 yard shot it is only at a fully committed bird.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

This is really a good question.
Novice shooter 15 to 20 yards Average shooter 20 to 30 yards Good shooter 35 to 40 yards Guide who shoots clean up 7 days a week 40 to 50 yards at missed birds that meer seconds before were feet down at 20 yards

45 yards max for me, length of a skeet feild. I shoot IC #4, can't expect to kill a bird more than 45 yards with that.

It happens, but I prefer 3's for out to 40ish I agree, that's why I shoot 3's early season then switch to 2's later in the season. A lot of times hunting with kids I am cleaning up after they miss those 20 yard shots. Sure is fun when I get to shoot them in tight when hunting without kids though.

I learned how to duck hunt from my father inlaw who has been hunting ducks for more than 60 years. In his words "If you take a shot at a duck that is not lighting on the water then you did not earn the right to shoot the duck" This was simple. Wings cupped and feet down!!! These shots are almost always under 30 yards and because of this I only use #4 shot. No problem killing big ducks.
