My son is wanting a GoPro camera for christmas. I've never had one. I'm sure he'll want to figure out a way to use it while hunting and also just typical boy stuff.
I've never had one. See them anywhere from $129 to $399. Can anybody who's familiar with them give me a short summary of the differences in models? Also what accessories would you recommend?
Thanks!

Fwiw, if they haven't got a gopro with zoom yet, they aren't worth it for hunting. Even at 15 yard bow hunting distance you can't really see any detail.

The difference in price is about technology. Of course the newer models have more technology, more storage, etc. so they cost more. Like any technology, whatever you buy will be out of date soon. My motto has always been to NOT buy the latest and greatest, but buy one step back.

My kids bought me the hero3 camera for Father's Day it has been a lot of fun
the mounts are what cost a lot of money
They make a variety of mounts for different things
The make a head mount and a chest rig
One of the best mounts is a c clamp you can mount on your gun barrel or side by side roll cage
You can control the camera with your smart phone using a free ap

Go Pros are awesome cameras and with a little creativity you can work wonders with them. I shot this video using my GoPro mounted on a 10 foot piece of 1 inch PVC and I controlled it with my HTC One M8 phone. this is a shooting video I shot using the head strap mount.

1st tip with a GoPro, don't get a GoPro! there are much better brands out there, GoPro was just first to market and markets the heck out of it.

I too have been asked by one of my sons for a camera, so if not GoPro, what brands/models can y'all recommend that would be good for hunting/fishing/sports for high school kid?

I just get tired of everyone just talking about Go Pro, shooting less quality videos, and then talking about them plunking into the water (on TFF). for hunting Go Pro is a little better than just fishing because it doesn't have the wide angle like needed for fishing. sorry, I just like to vent about it.

well it certainly WON'T be a GoPro camera!
THEY ARE ANTI HUNTING AND ANTI 2ND AMENDMENT, so I will happily spend $500-600 with one of their competitors and send the receipt and a short note to GoPro, as I normally do when these businesses decide to make political statements.

when shopping for new camera look for following...
1) replaceable batteries, so you can use all day in field.
2) option for wide angle or 1:1/zoom.
3) fits well with mount or hat/chest mount.
4) small light weight.
I have always used Contour HD, but they have kind of gone out of business and need to see what the latest and greatest is.
