Dang it! I took a shot at a spike today at 17 yards. I was in a tree stand. I thought I made a good shot but climbed down and the arrow was perfectly clean. I still looked for blood but didn't see any. From where the arrow was sticking out of the dirt, I shot over him. Man that sucks. I know my sights are on as I practiced this afternoon. This is a first for me and I hate it!

I missed, this and last year. Don't let it get you down, if a hunter says he hasn't missed, step back lightening is about to strike....
Don't give up, get back on the horse, this case your blind, get back in the game.
Good luck to ya

It happens, better than a wounded and/or lost deer. Might try practicing from that stand and see if your trajectory changes. Sometimes the different angles cause people to use a different anchor point resulting in either a low or high shot. Good luck and keep at them

That's a good point. I have not shot from an elevated position before. All my shooting has been on the ground. Ill have the wife lift me up in the bucket of the tractor tomorrow to shoot at my target a few times to see if it changes anything for me. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks all for the encouragements!

I haven't missed all year; I haven't shot at anything. I've had nothing but double fork horn bucks or bucks that did meet the 13" spread. I had a doe with some yearlings in two weeks ago, if she shows again, one of the yearlings is going to spend some time in my freezer. best deer meat I've ever eaten. You'll get on track once you practice from heights.

If you shoot at very many deer a miss will happen, learning from those misses can be important. Practicing from hunting positions can help a lot. Learning when to take the shot and not take the shot is also important.

I once missed a huge buck and then the same doe 3 times. This happened the week after I exclaimed to my Brother in law, "I've gotten so good with the bow, I don't think I am even going to pick up my rifle this year!" Previous to me saying that, I truly had never missed. Should have kept my mouth shut! If you hunt long enough, you will miss again.

I've missed high before from an elevated stand too until I learned about the cause and effect. A couple of things to check. The natural thing to do is to drop your bow arm and when you do you change everything, the higher your stand the more it will effect your point of impact. So try doing that and see the impact, then try drawing your bow normally and bending at the waist instead of dropping your arm. That should keep all your angles more normal and you will probably shoot just fine. You can see the difference in the house, act like your drawing your bow and drop your arm then do the same and bend at the waist. You immediately see the difference in your form. Good luck!

At least it was just a Spike. I missed a Huge 8 pointer one time before I knew how to properly tune a bow.
Aside from that...I practice from a tripod that is the same height as my stand from time to time. Seems to Help with confidence in my aiming point.

I missed this year as well. I didn't see a small branch and the arrow deflected and stuck in a tree 7ft up. I was sick!! That tiny branch is no longer there!!

UPDATE
I am the WORST bowhunter EVER! I cant believe I shot over another spike this morning. Shot placement was perfect left and right but just over his back at 35 yards. How frustrating! Ive practiced quite a bit this week as well and am on. Ive figured out my problem though. I am simply aiming to high. Ive always rifle hunted and aimed high behind the front shoulder and have dropped them. Well, I have been aiming at the same spot with the bow. I need to aim lower on the deer. Its that simple.
This is only my second year bowhunting even though Ive shot a bow for years. LAst year I took my first bow shot at a deer ever and got a doe. Im learning and hopefully now that I have figured out my issue with shooting high, Ill be good to go.

at that distance he mightve jumped your string. that could explain the shot being high. or you are peeking instead of staying behind the bow the whole time. form means alot in bowhunting opposed to rifle hunting. i like to keep the shots inside 20 yds and i say to my self, "Duck this!" when i let the arrow go.

You are probably dialed in and shooting target very well with tight groups. You are hitting target and it is very routine. You know where your arrow will hit. But....one of the most common errors in HUNTING is PEEKING. With adrenalin pumping and all the excitement, we sometimes don't even know we are looking up and trying to track the arrow or see the hit. Maintain your follow through and focus on your pin.....just like practice, go to autopilot. Think you will have fresh venison in the freezer after your next hunt. GOOD LUCK

I have missed more often than I want to admit. Three for three so far this season though. As stated earlier. Draw like you are shooting from the ground. Hold your bow with your normal form then bend at the waist, or lean in the seat, to line up on the deer. You have to maintain that 90 degree angle of bow arm to body. But as stated, better to miss than to wound.
