My kids were drawn two years ago. It was after a rain storm came through so the area was drenched. We didn't see anything. But that doesn't mean they weren't there.

hunted a lot of years ago on youth, my son and I did not see anything, but we stuck along the river and was very, very thick woods, hard to see anything, it could be ok, but I was not impressed, but I would not count it out to hunt again just in a different spot. good luck

We did our first hunt this PM. This is clearly the toughest woods walking I ever done and the hottest deer hunt I've been on! Tons of downed trees/limbs. You definitely need a GPS or a bunch of trail markers to get back and forth to the same spot. Several flat/open areas, but the grass is 4-5 ft tall so would be tough to hunt those areas from the ground. I've got one son and I in a pop-up with another up in a tree stand, both back in the woods. There were about 15 dads out today for youth weekend. Didn't hear of anybody getting a shot when we got back to the check station. We are hunting compartment 5A. Wish us luck for tomorrow AM! Sure wish I could throw some corn Charlie

I was there with my daughter too. We were in 8A. When I checked out this evening there had not been any deer shot all weekend. We didn't see a single deer or hog. It was great to get out and spend time with my daughter. We had fun, but it would have been nice to hear some more gunfire. Next up for us is Cooper lake.

Just like Boss Hog, we were nada. Saw a nice Doe scouting, but that was it.

I enjoyed it, but didn't see a single deer. The clearings were open but with 4ft tall grass as mentioned.

Got drawn for GDE this year. If any of you have topos or other research from last year, I'd be happy to buy them off you or hear any thoughts you have.

Any other information out there about Pat Mayse? Sounds like a really tough place to hunt. Trying to determine whether it is worth the drive up from the Houston Area on Youth Weekend Oct. 31- Nov. 1 or if it would be better for my daughter to stay and hunt at home that weekend to get a jump on the general season hunters there.

Based on our experience last year, I wouldn't drive up from Houston.

I hunted there years ago. We had a party of 3 hunters, and hunted over a weekend. None of us saw a deer. I did not hear any gunshots. I did not meet any other hunters who had harvested anything. I saw mostly coyote sign. And the update is, I never went back.

So the takeaway here is don't enter a draw hunt for Pat Mayse, huh? Sorry, couldn't resist!
Mike H. Got drawn for javelina at Elephant Mountain in January!
