Sightmark just released the Photon XT 4.6X. High hopes for this little unit. Just got word that the first units arrive tomorrow. I will keep everyone posted! $500 MAP and supposedly a 640x480 display.

Ok, just looked through a unit. It's on another level compared to the 3.5X. The display is much bigger, resolution is obviously much higher, the unit is lighter. All digital controls. What you see on the display is what the video out sends including reticle and icons. It has a battery indicator. Red green and white reticle colors. I can already tell this unit is going to be a big hit.
I would assume it's 3 years like all Sightmark night vision, but I will double check.

Hey! What's the trade in value on a 5X? Looks like your doubler will work on this one too.

Also, the brightness/contrast control has a 1-15 value unlike the photon 3.5x.

I would assume it's 3 years like all Sightmark night vision, but I will double check. I just went back and looked through the papers that came with my first Photon, I recalled seeing "Limited Lifetime Warranty" on something. Sure enough you get an insert (warranty notice) with the Photon that says Limited Lifetime but if you read the paperwork and their website they clearly state that Night Vision and Digital Systems are 3 years. Also can you double check that the PhotonXT has independent controls of brightness AND contrast. Thanks

only YouTube video I could find..course this may NOT be representative...or even the same scope! I would imagine it is since it has the colored reticle and it is displayed in the video out. Neither were present in previous models.

HTH--- Will you be doing a comparative review? Maybe 1st released versions vs the newer one?

HTH--- Will you be doing a comparative review? Maybe 1st released versions vs the newer one? I don't plan on doing one at this time. The engineering is very different between the two models and there were a limited number of the first year run sold. I'm not sure it would serve a wide enough audience to account for the time spent on my end. Flat out, from what I have seen thus far the XT is everything the original Photon would've wanted to be and I tip my hat to Sightmark for taking user feedback seriously and incorporating it into this version.

Here is some footage from the new Photon XT captured last night. It's just a quick run through of the menu functions and reticles. We will post more and better video soon.

NICE
and the +/- 30MOA of adjustment is also awesome!
I assume that is 1MOA @100 yards..right?
I am really liking the #2 Reticle..a la ATN Thor, Modified German Post with center dot!

Recoil rated up to...??? Same battery setup as 1st gen? Same IR wavelength as 1st gen? Recoil - .308 I hope...most are... Batteries - 2 AA's as before... Onboard IR - 150 mw, 805 nm....you'll want an aftermarket like the UNV IR20..

Not that familiar with the thermals. Is this a scope by itself or a mount in front of a scope? What's the cost, would like to upgrade from night style.

Not a thermal scope.
Digital night vision.
Integrated into scope.
$500 MAP.

would it be fair to compare this digital scope to the pulsar n750 or no? Maybe the different price points is enough to make this a sort of apples to oranges comparison, but not sure. I am just wondering as I was on the n750 bandwagon a while ago, but never really jumped in a purchased a digital nv scope (mostly because i discovered thermal and my eyes got really big, too bad my budget doesn't follow my eyes haha). Even still, I think that this scope could be all I really need to get my feet wet for now. I don't do too much night hunting, yet, and that's mainly due to the limitations I have with what weapons are allowed to be used on fort hood.
Which leads me to another question, how comparable is a 308 recoil to that of a 12ga shotgun? I've heard that they're basically the same, the 308 has more kick, and that the shotgun has more kick. I own both, but I think it makes a difference if you're shooting slugs or buckshot from a shotgun as well as whether you're using an ar10 which has a sort of recoil reduction or a bolt action rifle in 308. Neither one kicks very hard to me (mostly due to shooting my 50 beowulf a lot and my old 300 win mag I used to enjoy!), but it doesn't really matter how much I hate my shoulder, it's what the scope is actually rated for. If I should ask this in a separate thread I can do that also. Thanks.
First one down, many many more to come!
