anyone have a recommendation for an elk outfit? prefer native herd... HF LF doesn't matter. I'm fat and out of shape, so I don't want to scale the highest peaks, but walking around all day is no big deal. I've come across a LOT of different places online, but have no actual hard info on most of them. ANy help is appreciated!

If you try New Mexico now, it most likely will be a private land hunt, as all the lottery tags have been allocated. There are several Texas private ranches that offer elk hunts, just scope out the EXOTICS category. I used Brandon Gaudeli a few years ago in New Mexico - http://gilaguide.com/If you go to his website and the GALLERY tab, that's me in the black shirt holding the elk head of my 328" bull! You might check out Mulie Mike, but I think his elk hunts are already booked.

Lobo Outfitters out of Pagosa Springs, CO. They hunt public and private land and the private land is in NM. They are great guys and I know on the New Mexico private land, they only take about 2/3 of the hunters they actually could. Elk everywhere and the terrain is very manageable. http://www.lobooutfitters.com/

Lots of great last minute deals out there if you do some shopping around. There are Big herds of Elk on the Longfellow and I've driven through the Escalera a few times and have seen some great bulls from time to time. Both are great options if staying in Texas.

years ago, when I was in better shape & first computer used internet for a do-it-yourself Elk hunt in Colorado. Their was a guy that was real helpful. Computor got a bug so had ta put it down. that out a shape gets over rated. just know your limitations. u can probably get around better than me safe hunting

Never has "staying down wind" meant so much.

wow, I can't believe their success rate and costs aren't too bad. have you been? wonder what range of quality is? The catch is the LO vouchers (for all seasons) run +/-$10k. Or the tag generally takes 12-20yrs to draw, could get lucky though. FIL went last year and shot a 360s 5x5 that was old, passed up several in the 370-385" range looking for one over 400". They usually have yearly averages in the 370s. Stats kind of lie, some folks can't shoot and an archery hunter or 2 kept flinging arrows over gov tag quality bulls.

wow, I can't believe their success rate and costs aren't too bad. have you been? wonder what range of quality is? Out of 12 clients this year, one crunched for time shot a 359, everything else was over 385 with 3 over 400...and right in where they were hunting Mossback client shot their gov tag bull (430s). It was one that got passed up last year in the 390s that was broken up. Rain did them good this year.
