we had a heck of a time this past weekend, had to hunt hard for a couple. we had 4 kids and two adults and ended up with 7 rams! 4 gold's, two silvers and one no-score ram! all rams were under $650!
we set out early on Friday morning around 3:30 and drove 8 hours, we took off me and my boyfriend driving(Lauren and Jacob, and had a car full of kids! georgie(my nephew 16), matt(georgie's friend 16), Faith(Jacobs sister 12) and John(my cousin 14.
we all finally arrived and waited for MR.Temple to arrive to the ranch and just scouted out. we he arrived we split into two groups. one group hiked 2 miles and other hiked 4 and saw a couple rams and wanted to hold off till we found a shooter.
as we were coming back to the ranch we spotted a nice texas dall cross(prolly merino!) so Matt took my Remington model 7 7mm08 and put a quartering away shot into this ram with a fusion 140 grain bullet. he went 30 yards and piled up, he ended up getting a lung. this ram scored high silver and was 27" long, he had some nice mass, this ram was $360!
when we got him hung up I skinned and gutted him to be process for the hungry. we went off scouting trying to get another kid down for the day! we scouting and spotted a nice Corsican, my nephew john set off after him but got them mixed up and shot a NO tag $190 starter ram! this was one happy kid! he was shooting a 25-06!
we skinned the no tag Corsican we did not score him, and called it a night, we stayed in the trailer, it was livable and we all had a good time and good memories!
the next morning we got up early and it was raining so we set on the deck over looking the valley and not much was moving. finally the rain let up and the rams started feeding and moving around. I took a bow and my boyfriend Jacob thought it would be cool to let my nephew shoot a bow(WRONG!) he let him pull it back with no arrow and told him to let it down and he DRY FIRED IT! talk about one unhappy girl! I was made, I refused to kill a ram with a gun, I would just help scout and skin and watch the kids have a great time.
so me and Jacob took off with his little sister faith in search of a good looking black Hawaiian ram we finally got her set up on the ram and she took her shot, she grazed him, so she made a 3rd shot on him and dropped him! he went gold! 31" she was shooting a 44 ruger this ram was $650
as we were blood trailing the black ram, Jacob spotted a nice merino that he liked the shape of the ram and decided to take the ram with his bow. he made a really good shot on him and he didn't go to far!! he ended up just one inch short of gold and scored silver! this ram was $500!
we took a lunch break and headed back to skin these rams, MR.Temple asked why I wasn't carrying my bow and I explain the situation that I would not be shooting a ram, we had talked about a nice cross ram he had and said he would let me shoot him at a discount due to the fact that I would not be able to shoot my bow and also he said no one could ever hardly get a shot off on him! talk about this booger was smart! you would be stalking him threw the brush at 60+ yards (it was thick cedar) and he would spot you and bust out. so after we skinned and took off from lunch me and georgie took off in search of my ram and a nice Texas dall I spotted! we got on the ram several time but we were never presented a clean clear ethical shot so I held off. I eventually sent georgie back to the top were everyone else was sitting to observe I was going to set off on my own to be quit. I finally after two hour got a running shot on this ram at 60 yards. as I looked away from my scope I saw the ram jumping like a blackbuck. I went after him to find a crazy blood trail! I walked up on him and was very excited I was able to take a nice ram. he was entered in the record books as a Red Sheep, he is 1/2 transcaspican urail, 1/2 mouflon. he was 27" long and scored gold!! I was tickled and it was a challenging hunt. there was no way this sheep could have been shot with a bow. I will be doing a half body and only shot this ram for $650!
after they had him packed out me and gerogie took off after his texas dall we had our eyes on, we went two hundred yards and saw his ram bedded up with some aoudad and some Corsicans. we stalked up 75 yards got set up and flipped the safety and they jumped up and took off! we stalked them several time never to get a shot, we were just about to take a break when georgie spotted the ram walking broadside, we had him set up on the stick and he gave him a perfect shot!! at 55 yards. he drilled him with my 7mm08 he went 5 yards and fell backwards, his ram scored gold metal and was 32" on one side and 28" on his broomed off side. he was one happy kid! this ram was $650!
finally we got the rams skinned and my cousin john said he had spotted a nice merino was going to stalk him. he shot this dude running up a mountain and dropped him and he rolled down! he scored GOLD! and was $300! nice ram
we got them all skinned and quarted and hung! and called it a night and got all packed to leave out the next morning to head home! we had a blast a Thompson temples and you have to make it the hunt to have a good time! some rams were tamer than other and some you were not going to get a close shot at! we had a great time and made lots of great memories!
