IMO the Primos. I have some 80-100 dollar calls, but use the Primos "YO SISTA" the most. Best 25 bucks I have spent on a call http://www.mackspw.com/Item--i-PRI859

Best duck call for the money is a Haydels DR-85. No idea about goose calls.

I'd either ask to try some of your buddies calls or go to a sportsmens or cabelas and try them out. They should let you try just about any call even the cheap ones. Hell I've done it without asking before. Seems like most of the calls come in those plastic containers that you can open and close back without "breaking" it open.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

For a good cheap starter call that is very forgiving, I am going to second the DR-85 recommendation. My lanyard still has a BDR-95 on it. Its just a bigger barrel version of the DR-85.

i like the shawn mann shorty express for my goose call. i think it is like 60 bucks. then i got an rnt fro my duck call it was a little pricey but i have never been more comfortable with a call. (and that came with lots of practice with that call). And i did have yo sista and i like it but a few years ago it cost me and dnb79 a blonde mallard when it squeled like a stuck pig so it now lies in pieces in the bottom of a loak after being shot. still liked the call. but any who i have had some good cheap calls that i have tuned and got to where i like but those two are my favorites but i do mess with them too.

Haydel's DR-85 and a Haydels MP-90 are all you need in life!!! I swear by them. For geese, I always used the Quaker Boy Longneck goose flute. Now I have a Lohman Gold Series Canada Goose call.
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.

I uses BGB calls like Springcreek does. They make a cocobolo/poly double reed which my brother will get for Xmas. The best part is it is only 50 bucks. Im just a BGB guy myself and I have been using a smokin mallard double for a long time.

i picked up the $50 BGB coco/poly right before the season and i love it... it's a great sounding call that doesn't require that much air pressure.. definitely allowed me to improve on some of the basic calls.
