Maine in the US has lots of black bear with fall and spring hunts, Brittish Columbia in Canada has a lot.

I saw a guy post an ad on facebook for around $1600 for meals and lodging for two people and you can kill 2 bears each. Northern Georgia.

Martin,

Here is some advice to you, coming from someone who has lived amongst/hunted & guided black bears for the last 20 years. First, if you are coming all the way from argentina DON'T settle for some rinky-dink, weekend warrior who claims to be a bear guide. Make it not only a hunt, but an ADVENTURE you'll long remember. You have to remember this 1) bears living in populated areas of the states are more of a nuisance creature than a game animal. By this I am saying, they are so aware of human cohabitation that they really aren't that much a "wild" animal. Also, to harvest a true "giant" bear, you will need to hunt a area where they have a chance to grow into one. Point, I believe the average bear taken in Minnesota is only around 113 pounds (DNR reports). which is considerably small compared to a Canadian brute. To get into a true, remote location bear hunt that you'll really appreciate I would point you either close to the Canadian border, or into Canada itself. (as this is the area I am familiar with) Keep in mind, each state has its' own laws reguarding permits and lottery draws licenses, baiting, dogs, seasons, ect. So, with lots of options out there for you... you'll need to do some research. Good luck! Here is a nice 250+ pound Canada bear.

I didn't realize that "someone who has lived amongst/hunted & guided black bears for the last 20 years." had to show a "nice 250+ pound Canada bear."
The only statement from the above post that I would agree with would be the "average bear weight harvest" at 113lbs that maybe true, But in that defense its because most hunters don't pass up the opportunity of shooting a bear meaning most people shoot the 1st Bear they see! so that's why the state average is on the small end!

Here is a Bear that Proves we have the TROPHY genetics in Minnesota and in our guiding areas!
2010 9' 790 lbs!

MINNESOTA is a Great state to hunt Black Bears.
You just need the right Guide and willing to pass on smaller bears if you want a big bear!! like I said most people don't pass! and we do have clients that shoot smaller bears! Not all of them are 300+!

I am gonna say Eastern NC with Mike Conman. I believe the world record came from NC. I have seen some go over 700 and they look like grizzlies. Plus this is the first year they have allowed for baiting so some brutes are going to fall.

Ok...I didnt want to say it....but cant help myself..
I live with and hunt the biggest bears on the planet...the Kodiak Brown Bear. A 9' Brownie is a great bear!
NO WAY IS A BLACK BEAR EVER A 9 FOOTER....and Ive killed some monsters on Prince of Wales that are over 21 1/2" 700 lb bears...they may push 8'....
A 790 lb blackie is a MONSTER no doubt...but not a 9 footer..Alaska has some great boat based DIY hunts that wont break the bank.

As past president of the Austin chapter of SCI, I have had numerous contacts with black bear outfitters and know a whole bunch of hunters who have hunted black bear. Hands down, the best black bear outfitter I know is Ken Gangler in Canada (Manitoba). I personally know at least 10 people who have hunted with him, including one of my best friends and his two sons.

Not sure where the nine footer comment came from. Hope it wasn't directed at me. I know the bears here are huge but I commented on weight not length. Actually I had always thought the bears here were short and fat like a pig from the hunt photos I had seen but when I saw the full body mount it was impressive. I think a lot of it is the very mild winters and the fact that they are living in peanut country helps them pack the weight on. I started feeding the deer roasted peanuts this year and some I killed had fat in their guts. Deer here are 90 pounders and I had never seen that before. On 100 acres in a borderline suburban surrounding they ate 4-5000 lbs of peanuts. we have a bit of a whitetail epidemic in NC

Oh and given the choice I would do a POW hunt over an NC hunt any day. I was in Ketchikan and the fishing guide said they had more bears than people. Not sure if he was exaggerating but I have ben trying to convince my wife that we need to move there since we got back.

Funny, funny, funny... Like I said, nobody deserves to get hooked up with a shady guide when booking a hunt. Kodiak, you are right about the nonsense of a 9 foot black bear. Funny thing is you were fooled with the 790 pound joke. From what I can find, the Minnesota state record black bear is at 642 pounds! Michigans record is 510 pounds, and Wisconsin is at 737. Guess the 790 was just never official???

I had to giggle on the trail cam pic dated 7-18-13. I am just going to take it for granted that this bear IS NOT standing on a bait station, or the date is incorrect since we both know baiting season isn't open 'til mid-august in mn. And what's up with all of minnesotas' crazy baiting rules and regs?

So someone please tell me, what is wrong with displaying a typical sized animal (225+ bear in photo) that one could expect to harvest in a typical area? The area in Canada that I hunt one can expect a bear of this size pretty common. I could go over to the town landfill and click a photo of some bears as big as a volkswagon, but that is not what I would try to push over onto anyone. And to top the situation off, my Canada Bear Management Unit consisting of 87 square kilometers exclusively hunted by my guests, which consists of my family & friends. I really am not interested in dealing with the public anymore. I just don't get it?

One can shuffle the deck any way you like, but it will be hard-pressed to compare a state-side hunt to one north of the canadian border.

I have been doing taxidermy for 37 years...been in Kodiak since 87...and a licensed Alaska Assistant big game guide...So Ive seen a couple bears...lol
Sillyhorses is right...theresnothing wrong with a 250 lb black bear..AND..the experience is the..or should be...tje most important part.

The Black Bear that is stated 9' 790# is the information that was given to me by the place that has it on display. (via phone yesterday) If that information is inaccurate then I apologize. The Bear was to just show the Trophy potential we have in Minnesota and the areas we guide! The Bear is not a Record due to it was recovered as a road kill bear and found in the am the next day. All the information is on the plaque on the display case, as far as the dimensions of the Bear, who found it, how it was recover, who mounted it, etc... Next time I am at my cabin (at the end of April). I will take a better picture of the bear and the plaque this will confirm the information about the bear displayed. At that time I also start place cameras out at old bait sites and on game trails.
IF* you were a guide you know that Black bears come back to old bait sites to look for food and most often there is still a scent there from the old bait that's why the 2 dates are in July. Like I said we have the huge Bears here just like some areas in Canada and Alaska. Our population is approx 20,000-30,000 bears. I volunteer with the MN DNR on studies with different kinds of Wildlife. I am very knowledgeable when it comes to the wildlife in my area where I guide and live!

The pic posted of the 250# followed by the comments about MINNESOTA were implied that Minnesota has tame little bears and uneducated shady guides! That is why I displayed a few pictures to show that is not true at all!

Minnesota is a great state that has record making animals each year!

Minnesota and I came under attack with false information that needed to be corrected.

If no one believes the Bear on display you may drive to or fly into Minnesota and I will personally show you the Bear myself!

Good Luck and Happy Hunting! -Jake

Check some of the bears on Mike's link I posted if you haven't already or google NC bears and see for yourself. I had never heard about them being so big here until I moved here. Like I said I think it is the climate here that allows them to weigh so much. I still think you will get a larger bear length wise somewhere else but for shear weight it is a good state.

Here's a link to Minnesota's fact sheet on bears. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mammals/blackbear.html Pine County, where Jake hunts, is in a no quota area so tags aren't a problem. The statistics that sillyhorses quotes, factor in cubs that are killed, that brings down the average weight. When you hire a professional guide it's not to harvest a cub. That said the bears in MN and most of North America will be smaller than bears taken from Prince of Wales Island or similar British Columbia islands. Just as Brown Bears and Coastal Grizzlies are bigger than Inland Grizzlies, due to their salmon rich diet, Black Bears that can access a salmon diet, without competing with the bigger bears, are larger.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

None of our Hunters have shot a cub! Shooting cubs are illegal in Minnesota! POW or BC has big black bears, but it still doesn't factor out that Minnesota or any other state doesn'thave big bears too! That's my point!
