Hey folks,
Anyone have guns with carvings on/in the wood? How are they finished and how do you care for them. I have a real nice ruger 77 that someone foolishly thought it'd look cool with a wild boar carved in the buttstock.... the image of the hog is not that bad but still a pretty goofy idea and they left it at the carving without any treatment. Wondering what is the best way to protect it and make it a little more bearable so any tips are appreciated.
Was thinking just to sand/smooth the wood real nice then give a couple or three coats of varathane (polyurethane?) which is a nice weatherproof approach but I don't know what it would do in the carved area and once it's there it's too late. So maybe something else would be better. Just want it to look nice and be protected. It's not a family hierloom or anything, just an old but hardly used rifle.
Is it as simple as getting another stock and swapping???? I keep reading about fully bedded, full floating, yadda yadda........ If so, I'd watch for a synthetic one and call it good. Gun was free (if you don't count time, hassle, and paperwork fees) and will be prolly my most used one because it has a 3-9x scope with iluminated dot as apposed to my fixed 6x equiped rifle.

Hi Daven, I have no experience with protecting a carving, but would imagine you would do it the same way you would protect checkering. Boiled linseed oil. Birchwood Casey Tru Oil is the brand that I use. You would have to refinish the whole stock in order to make it match. As far as swapping stocks for a new one, yes. You can purchase a stock that is just a bolt on, and in most cases will not require any fitting. Try www.boydsgunstocks.comBest of luck!

You could fill it in with two part epoxy or glass it in. Sand smooth, and paint the whole thing.

Just get some tru oil and rub it in good. It will protect it. To sand that out I think you would have a very thin butt that would break easily.
It not that bad just tell everyone it is a factual reproduction of original cave man art!
