This is not a versus or comparison thread. I know the .22 WMR has much more power. My thoughts are, I already have a .22LR. Its a Savage 64 (semi) with a cheap Bushnell on top. For the price, its a great gun, but not flawless. If I get a .22LR again, I want a better one which, in my mind, is the Ruger 10/22 (I want a semi). Or should I go 22 mag? I know everyone needs a good .22LR but should I just step the .22 up a notch? What are the disadvantages to this? I could just headshot everything too small with the mag or use my 12 gauge loaded with 4 shot. If I do go .22LR, which 10/22 model should I get? I don't plan on decking it out besides a scope. If I go mag, what make and model should I get?

I'm guessing you've handled it? I've heard the Remington semi rim fires are jam-o-matics.

A Remington 597 is a jam o matic, but a 552 is one of the best semi auto 22s ever made.

I'd look at the Ruger American Rimfire. It is a bolt action but uses the 10/22 rotary mags. Comes in both calibers. For LR I always use irons. For my magnum I did add a scope. I bought the magnum about 4 months ago thinking ammo would be easier to find, then it dried up. I have the 10/22 takedown and I like it too. I'm sure I am no help cause I like them all.

Buckeye, I've read about those and actually handled one and it felt nice. Thanks for the suggestion. Any problems with yours?

I have a Remmy 552 that I have had for over 40 years. Shoots very well and about the only time it's ever jammed is with shorts. I have a Remmy 597 in 22 mag with a Leupold Rifleman on it. It has never jammed on me and it is a tack driver.

The Remington 552 has two great advantages in my opinion.

1) Will reliably cycle 22 short, long and long rifle.
2) It is built like a nice center fire rifle, and not a lightweight or compact rimfire like most 22s these days. Makes it great for hunting.

Another vote for the 552 speedmaster, have owned 3 and one will not leave my possession until I am ready to pass along a family heirloom. I much prefer the older ones with the bead front sight and sliding ram rear sights, lowest notch LR is on, second notch long, third notch shorts those get it within minute of squirrel. Short hollow points are great for small game, quite and very effective.

the only other 22 that comes close to the 552 for fun I own is a Winchester 62A.

Savage makes great .22mag rifles. Very accurate and well built. I have one and it lives upto it's reputation

Since you've already got a nice .22LR, might wanna check out the Henry GB in .22WMR.

They are very nice and the action is smooth as butter.

How is it in terms of accuracy?

You are dead on the money. Get yourself a 10/22 and make it your own. I consider them to be the semi-auto 22lr that all others want to be. Remember that 22wmr is way expensive and very rare. I can shoot .223 for the same price.

I was thinking about that, because I know that once I get out of college, I will be getting a .223 AR. Whats the better model to get? I was thinking the Sporter. The stock looks better than the cheapest wood stock and I have heard good reviews out of it.

The downside to 22 mag over 22lr is price... well, before 22lr went out of stock, that is.

Don't forget Marlin model 60 as far as 22lr goes

The best model Ruger 10/22 would be the 10/22T, with a bull barrel. But don't get carried away, as the standard taper barrels also shoot well.

The best 10/22 would be a Kidd Super Grade rifle.

I thought about that. But I don't want one of the new Remlins. Don't know if the Model 60's quality has fallen along with the rest of Marlins stuff, but would rather not risk it.

Cast, I will have to investigate those.

If you wanted a 10/22 and a 22 WMR, you could probably snag a 10/22 IN 22 WMR on GB. smile

Yeah, I wish. The Ruger 10/22mags are all over priced and unreliable, as the bolt cracks on them. I built a custom 10/22 mag that is holding up so far, but I wouldn't ask that of a newbie like the OP. No offense OP, just looking out for your sanity, those old 10/22mags will make you cry.

Another vote for the speedmaster. I had my granddad's till someone decided I didnt need anymore and stole it. Best dang 22 I've ever owned.
Next favorite is an older Model 60 then a 10/22.
Other than those 3 I wouldn't care to own it in semi.
