I'm considering getting an older golf cart as a deer lease ride. My buddies goes pretty much everywhere and quietly. Super cold weather seems to be hard on them charge wise but other than that it should be a working option for me. I have several questions though. Is a 48 volt unit that much better than a 36 volt for time of use per charge and power (torque)? If I bought a 36 volt and wanted to convert it to 48 volt how much expense is involved?

I tried the golf cart route. Just didn't have enough balls for my lease. I think they would work great a flat terrain and dirt roads. My lease grows more rock than anything else and had several decent hills to climb. 5 mile round trip over rough roads and tough climbs meant I had to stay in camp to recharge after the morning hunt so I could do it again in the evening. On top of that I could only manage 3 bags of corn plus myself up my tougher climbs to feed feeders. That meant more trips, more charging, etc.

Sold the golf cart and made the switch to a polaris big boss

I can see that not working. My stand, most of the stands, are 1.5 miles or less one way for us.

I like the golf cart idea but know nothing about them. I don't golf. I don't allow my 4 wheelers to be used while hunting. I have found that they notify every animal around of our presence. A nice, quiet golf cart sounds like a good idea to me. On a 48 volt model, how far can they go on a charge and how long to recharge? Do they take special batteries?

I have a 36 volt Ez Go TXT that can haul 4 hunters out to the stands in the morning, around 2 miles or so, run around during the day and same use for the evening hunt without needing a charge.

It has a high torque motor and upgraded controller on it. I havent found a hill it wont climb. (I've been looking). It would probably flip over backwards before it bogged down.

a couple people and about a dozen bags of corn onthe back is no problem.

Do some research on Buggies Unlimited forum about the upgraded cables and such and you can get a lot of power out of your 36 volt.

I'm looking at a 36v ez go for purchase is why I asked. Also, why do they use six 6v batteries instead of three 12v batteries?

I think the 6 volt in series last longer because you basically have 2 batteries to store power and make 12 volts where as in a 12 volt bat you have 12 volts, but only one battery storing it.

This and the 6V batteries have thicker plates to hold a charge longer and are a true deep cycle.
I've been looking into building a wind turbine system for power at the lease and the common opinion with these is that a bank of six volt batteries is better than a 12 volt bank.

I have a Yamaha G16 gas golf cart for my hunting buggy.

Jakes 6" long travel lift and bigger knobby tires.

A lot more quiet than your typical ATV type buggies and will go anywhere I want to go where I hunt.

A tank of gas will last a long time.

91 ezgo 36v stock

I love it! And have yet to have issues with it hauling deer, pigs, etc. I can go to my stand 1.5 mile one way, cross a creek, and the kids can run around the front pastures and still have plenty of power to hunt the evening before needing a charge.

Just picked up some new shoes and a lift for her

I have thought about getting one, but was concerned about run time and speed. From Treebass' post, seems run time isn't an issue too much, how fast will it go?

I have an old GPS mounted in mine. On flat ground it will run about 20 MPH. You can do a lot with different controllers if you want torque or speed.

I got a winch from Harbor Freight for about $50 and mounted it on the back for when I go in a little too far head first. I mostly use it for dragging pigs. I just hook em up and drag em the mile or so back to camp or to the bone yard. No need lifting the big nasty ones onto the cart.

This is Pre-Winch days.

Mine being stock will run 16mph (GPS), But I don't run like that at the lease, to many hills and turns. But the concern you will have with speed is the golf cart breaks are only rated for 15-16mph, so an upgrade would have to be done to be safe.

You can upgrade your cables, controller, etc...to get more speed and torque. I prefer having the torque over the speed since I'm at the lease, and don't get in a hurry for anything. You'd be surprised what 16mph thru the woods is like

Golf Carts do great IF they are modified correctly. Don't think you're just going to throw a lift and big tires on a cart and be good to go. The stock electrical system is simply not designed for it. You need to beef up the cables, controller, and forward/reverse switch to handle the extra load. If not, it will either be gutless or you will break something. Maybe both.

I built this cart last year specifically for hunting and ranch work. Started out as a $300 pile of junk on Craigslist, but soon dumped a bunch more in it. Converted to 48V, 700 amp controller, 2-ga cables, 6" lift, heavy-duty springs, custom bed, etc. It will easily haul two men and 400lbs of feed in the bed. It crawls up hills with ease due to loads of torque. And, it will run 22 MPH empty. Cruising range is about 9 miles. Best of all, it's dead silent. Only noise is the tires on the gravel. So far, it's been great.

I have yet to get stuck in the creek, although I did take my buddies gutless wonder one day and almost got it stuck. The problem is really with your tires, if you dont have the correct tire to throw the mud, it will get sticky and just spin. If you have alot of muddy areas, you may want to consider something along the gator V tread I think they are called. they shred the mud. But then again, its an electric cart, so its heavy, and evventualy you will get stuck

Nice ride TxAg, looks like you did it right up

Forgot to adress this. It's pretty straight-forward; I took this route in building my cart. You will need a new controller, and a different battery and cable set. But, in most cases you can re-use the stock motor if it's a Series cart. A 36V series motor actually does great at 48V, a nice bump in torque.
