I had to work all day yesterday, but still had a little life left in me to take a co-worker hunting for a few hours last night. We got two hogs in just a couple of hours and this guy was the last of the two. We were heading home and checking one last orchard and he was out there alone, pushing his nose through the leaf piles trying to find a few pecans.

We closed the 300 yard gap while using the trees cover our approach since it was so bright outside. We got to 40 yards and did the count down. The boar took a 6.8 spc 90 grain gold dot hand load from my new SBR and a 122 grain 7.62x39 hollow point to the shoulder and ran. I tagged him one more time in the right rear quarter as he ran away. Then he dropped and did the dirt dance.

He weighed 265 pounds and was ancient. We pulled the tape tight three times and got 46.5-47 inches so I took the smaller of the measurements. This guy had scars everywhere and his teeth were worn down to nubs. He had one foot that had been broken and healed all out of whack. It was a giant club foot and nearly double the size of the others. He even had mites on him during the winter! Big NASTY boar. I think he would have weighed a lot more during his prime years, but he was still big!

Sorry for the blurry pictures. My normal camera decided to stop working right after we shot this guy. So, all I had was my cell phone.

Nice video. Guess he didn't realize he was dead on the first shot.

That old guy could still haul bacon !

By way of VIDEO review he appeared to cover approximately 200 yards of distance in 10 seconds before the final quartering shot blew out his rear tire.

Awesome animals even in their advanced age....

Can you tell us more about the 90gr gold dot bullets, you've mentioned them in your previous posts and so I think they aren't standard fare for the caliber and you are giving them a good field test. With the shot placement you took on old Brutus here he should have been DRT so where did the first shot penetrate to?

Thanks and good job!

BB

The first shot was pulled a little to the left and hit on the shoulder. It did not exit, but I could feel it under the skin on the off side. The second shot was in the left rear quarter and penetrated somewhere to the chest cavity, but did not exit.

The 90 grain gold dot is made by federal/ATK/Speer for the 6.8 SPC. These are the pulled bullets that were sold by Rocky Mountain Reloading about a month ago. These are a very basic bonded bullet and are designed for removal of two legged critters. Federal has a large contract with a couple of foreign countries for loaded ammo using these bullets.

Mine are hand loads using SSA brass, CCI450 primers, Accurate Arms 2200 powder at 31.3 grains, OAL 2.295, 2750 fps at the muzzle from a 12.5" AR15 Performance barrel. They do some pretty good damage on most hogs, but this was just a big old boy. They expand very well and hold together like a champ. The ones I have recovered have only lost about 8-12 grains of weight.

My go to hog bullet is still the Hornady 120 sst in a 16" barrel 6.8 spc. However, I bought these 90 grain bullets to compensate for some of the lost velocity of a 12.5" barrel.

The hog only covered about 60 yards after the shots. Depth perception is thrown off with the night vision and iphone. The trees are about 15-20 yards apart for a general reference.

I love the 6.8 SPC to the bone. Took 5 pigs in a row, rapid fire, on a Halloween night with 7 shots. 2 shots missed one charging before putting him down. All 5 hits were kills. 115 gr SSA, forgot which bullet. Congratulations on a great year!
