I'm a firm believer in there's no wrong way to kill a snake, but how did you take him out? Shotguns usually leave a pretty good sized wound and he looks pretty clean.
There is time, and you must take it, to lay your hand on your dog's head as you walk past him lying on the floor or on his settle, time to talk with him, to remember with him, time to please him, time you can't buy back once he's gone" GBE

It is still so hot. I killed a copperhead last week. That looks like a big one.

Sticks are a good way to kill a snake and you get to keep the head that way. BTW- snakes can be pretty tricky- I thought I had shot off the head of one. It flipped belly side up and looked dead BUT- looked like the head was still on. I really didn't want to shoot it a second time for fear of busting it up too much so I walked off looking for a stick- I hadn't gone over 10 feet when the snake flipped right side up and started crawling off. Well, heck- I ran back and blew it's head off at point blank range that time- the point is- make sure the thing's dead. That's a really nice one- hope you are going to tack that one up on the wall. I'm trying to recall how I did my last one but if I recall right- borax and then glycerine (sic?). Bugs will sometimes eat a snake skin- I put a coat of varnish over minbe to keep the scales on and the bugs off. They say if you put the skin where the sun shines on it- it will fade over time. I have mine on a wall out of the sun's rays. Some guys take the skull and have in encased in a block of plexiglas- pretty good paperweight.

Snakes are on the move to dens. Be very careful right now. If you find one the den maybe close with more snakes in that area!

It's a trophy snake as far as I'm concerned. Really nice.

As I saw Bill Oxner quote one time: "If I ever saw a snake like that in the field, I would shoot my way back to the truck."
Yes, I believe I would too. And lock myself in....

One of the hunters at my deer lease in Webb county killed a 5'er yesterday at 3:00 PM. It froze Tuesday night, and was 50* yesterday when snake was killed. They never really den up down there. I've seen them out every month of the year.
