I dont own an AR but want one in a bad way. I need the best one for the value. I want one to hunt with (Deer, hogs, Yotes). I may sling some ammo when I first get it just for play but it will primarily be a hunting rifle that will be riding around in the ranch truck and on the 4-Wheeler. I need a gun I can use and not one so expensive that it cant be bang upped.
What your suggestions as far as brand? I am most likely going to go with a 308 over the 223 since it will be a hunting gun with a scope on it.
Thanks for your input in advance!

I would look at either DPMS, S&W, or CMMG for an AR in 308.
You may also want to check out a 6.8SPC. Palmetto State runs 6.8 uppers cheap from time to time.

There is a great deal on one in the classifieds for $675 right now.

Do not overlook the 6.8 SPC cartridge. I love mine!

For the price my vote is for 6.8 SPC compared to an AR-10/LR-308 platform. I built one with parts from PSA and it is a good shooter. 140 gr Berger VLD can be loaded to magazine length if you use PRI mags too!

Definitely 6.8 if you're walking around. .308 if you're sitting in one spot mostly. My GAP-10 .308 rigged out weighs over 15 lbs.

300 Blackout, 7.62x39,6.5 Grendel, in small actions, and 7-08, or 308 in a large action. If you want a blaster .223, but i'm NOT a .277 fan.(.270,6.8 etc)

Not a. 223, .300aac, or7.62x39 if you plan on deer. That leaves an AR15 in 6.8 or an AR10.

Get you a 6.8. Same base gun as 223. Then you can get a 223 upper and swap out. Much more flexibility with the standard AR 15 platform.

Thanks for your input in advance! Krayton: If you go with the AR10 (.308) then the price of poker goes up significantly. It sounds to me like a 6.8 would be an excellent match for you. An option that I would consider for your stated purposes would be a complete kit from Model 1 Sales. For about $680 you will receive a complete upper that's ready to fire, a lower parts kit and the buttstock and parts. You will have to provide your own lower (which you can find for under $100) and some assembly is required, but if you can change the oil in your car or put together furniture from Ikea, you can build a lower receiver. http://www.model1sales.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=182http://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=577&name=Lower+Receivers

.223 rem, 6.8spc, 300 blackout/whisper, 6.5 Grendel, 308 based cartridges will all kill deer in the state of Texas.
The AR15 based cartridges are going to be lighter, and cheaper. You are starting to see the 6.8spc and 300BO on academy and Wal-mart shelves.
No, none of those calibers are going to be as ballistically impressive as long action calibers with twice the powder capacity, but again, they will kill deer with boring regularity.
I've personally seen a .223 make the vitals of a deer mush.
Have fun. The PSA 6.8spc rifle kit looks good to me.

Yep. Under 8lbs. out of the box, incredible selection and availability of ammo. I won't even address the cartridge, because we already know. If you decide that you want something different, it will be easier to sell than some others.

If you get a 6.8 make darn sure it has a 1-11 or 1-12 twist. Some still use the 1-10 and even 1-9.5 and they will not handle the hotter loads. ARP (ar15performance) is one of the best barrels you can get and they are one of the least expensive at $205. If you want more info on the 6.8 then go HERE and read up.

My dad just bought a Core15 M4Scout for $720 out the door. It comes with a lifetime transferable warranty, chromed or stainless barrel(your choice), chromed bcg, stainless gas tube and key, flat top rail, Magpul stock and magazines, 100% mil-spec. I couldn't find a single negative review. I am very impressed with it.

458 socom, 450 bushmaster, 50 beuwolf, 25wssm, 243 wssm, 30 rar. All would work in a ar15 for hunting. I know Im still trying to find someone to take a 458 socom case and neck it down to 7mm for me, that would be a fun round I think.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

My $.02
The AR Platform in general gives you lots of choices and options so the same lower can mount several uppers in different calibers, lengths, etc. Hunting accuracy can be acquired with off the shelf versions from several brands.
I think factory packages are more consistent than are the "Built" guns where you acquire a lot of parts and assemble it. I did that with a CQB weapon, but I would go with a factory built model for hunting. I ended up going with a bolt gun in .308.
.308 gives you lots of ammo choices including Subsonics. A great reputation and plenty of stopping power and range.
.300 BLK also gives you Subsonic options with similar terminal ballistics to .308. Maybe less range, but certainly enough for hunting.
.223 is mostly ok for white tails, but don't hunt in Bear Country without something bigger on your hip.
Good Luck cwc

300 blk out is a great round for what you are looking for Not as heavy as a 308 frame ar and takes care of killing And recoil is low
