I ask a lot of dumb questions on this forum. I apologize.

With that said, how far from cover will deer hit feeders during daylight hours regularly? How far from a woods line is too far? The spot I'm considering is well within a very traversed corridor, but it'd be right in the middle of a hay field.

I'm asking, because I'm trying to figure a good place for both a 2nd feeder on my property and a tripod stand where I can shoot to the feeder. It'd be ideal if I could have the feeder about 100 yards from a small patch of woods on a creek, but a solid 250 yards from the major wooded/hiding areas they come in/out of.

I've only hunted very small properties (40-80 acres) so I don't have a lot of experience with wide open setups. I guess another option would be for me to learn to shoot further than the 250 or so I'm comfortable with, but that's probably not the route I'll take.

Thoughts?

I was told many years ago that deer feel comfortable about 70 or so yds from cover in any direction. After that they start to get a bit uncomfortable. I do know in large oat or wheat fields they tend to feed into them and then get way out away from cover if they can. They seem to feel a bit more comfortable in those fields way out from cover. I do know that they will feed earlier in the evening if the feeder is closer to or in thicker cover than if it is in a really wide open area.

Not a dumb question. I think it depends on how wild the deer are. There is no set distance.

Really depends on the hunting pressure in the area. I would stay within 50 yards.

The question I'd ask myself before I did it is, how long will it take them to get from the bedding area? The answer would tell you if you can get them there within shooting light.

Depends

We have a feeder in a field across from camp. Deer come from the brush about 100 yards away or so.
