I had my feeders set for 3 seconds, but on my game camera most of the activity is in the midnight hours. So I set the runtime for 1 second trying to pattern them better and get them to come to corn while I'm in the stand. The reasoning being; less corn on the ground, I better get there before its all gone.

Does this make sense? Will I possibly re-pattern some of these more nocturnal deer? Or am I shooting myself in the foot and reconditioning the late night crew to bypass my feeder altogether.

This is on high fence, so I'm not worried about holding deer, just patterning for hunting/viewing.

What say you?

How long do you set your feeder for?

Deer will be nocturnal due to heat and time of year right now. Also it shows the deer are in great shape and not needing the corn just yet. If you run for only 1 sec they might not come later on in the year since there is no reason to. I would still feed the same amount. I run my feeders from 4-6 seconds twice a day right now and I just reset mine yesterday to more of a hunting time. They cleaned most of it this morning with the cooler temps. Also if you have acorns/mast crops they will be eating those. I would want to keep as many does around as I could for the rut.

I have my spin plate a little closer to my funnel to minimize the wind blowing the corn off the plate, so I run mine for 6 seconds. Plus the longer run time gives the deer more time to hear it.

I usually do 3 seconds in the off season and then when it gets closer I bump them up to 6 seconds. Depending on how well they clean that up I may bump that up some as well but typically 6 works.

I set mine at 3 seconds and you would think the way you are doing it would make them come out earlier but it won't it's just a matter of Mother Nature right now.... When the moon goes away they should start moving during the day more....

Yeah, but I'm high fenced on 500 acres, so I'm not worried about losing does to neighboring properties.

But yes, what you say makes sense, and I have 15 acres of oats throughout the property plus there is plenty to eat out there with the rains of September.

I guess that answers that. That's enough answers for me to set them back to 3 seconds. Now I'm wishing I didn't jump the gun and set them for 1 second this past weekend. I'll be driving fast Friday to reset.

I understand and read you are HF. But if you do not feed and have plenty of natural forage and protein feeders the deer will quit coming to your corn. It will take some time to get them back. Do you use a road feeder? Do you have any exotics?

I'm in on 3 seconds. The problem lately seems to be too many corn thieves, raccoons, turkey, hogs. By the time the deer come around there's not much left. Thank goodness our oat fields are green as a gourd.

I tried Indian corn. It only works in the summer. And my supplier is kinda shady.

No exotics. No hogs. And with a camera at 5 different feeders taking over 6000 photos in the last month, only 5-10 pics have coons in them.

I will still have corn under the feeder from one hunt to the next at times. And I road feed with a bag hanging out the window, and will have corn in the road all day. I see plenty of deer and am sure we're not under CC.

I just think its really a matter of there being plenty of groceries out in the brush right now.

Shoot, I cant afford the 6 second spin but I do run at 2 seconds in the am at 7 when the sun is just starting to come up, then again at 4p.m for another 2 seconds and finally, when they are about gone, I set my feeder again for Saturday night to through right before sun goes down for another 2 seconds. So essentially I am throwing 6 seconds like I cannot afford to do, but it don't make me feel as bad because I have it going off at different times.

Continue to run 3 seconds, in your situation Deer are trained to come to a feeder because it is a meal that is always there when your natural browse starts to die or has been mostly eaten up they will start visiting the corn regular again.

With the price of deer corn, my feeders are set at 3 seconds.

That seems excessive.

I do throw in the am and pm though.

Not really. If you want to keep deer moving while you are hunting then it is good way to do it. If you have a lot of deer it is a great way to keep them active around you and on your land. Deer moving later or moving in from a distance will stop in for corn. If it brings in the right doe on the last feeding cycle with that dream buck in tow then I'd say it was worth it. I have fed 4 times per day since 1991 with feeders. This past year is the first time I did not have 4 feeding times 4-6 sec each cycle per day but I do use a tailgate feeder to feed also.

Feb-Aug: 2 seconds twice daily

Aug-Jan: 4 seconds twice daily

Spin plate is pretty close so it seems to be throwing a good amount of corn to keep them coming in

We don't feed but from Oct. through Jan. and we don't have hogs so we run our feeders 8 sec. Morning and afternoon. Never have any problems with leaving anything. During drought we up it to 10 sec. Each feeding.

If you feed them, they will come. I run my 2 feeders all year to maintain my traffic and watch the growth of my regulars, but the closer we get to deer season I generally increase the feed times. I do 3 seconds all year but starting August I turn them up to 8 seconds. Starting October through January I turn them up to 10.

Right now, I am at 3 seconds twice a day. But this thread is convincing me that I should add a lunch time dinner bell.

15-25 seconds, twice daily. and it will not last more than 30 minutes to an hour. Too overloaded with exotics.
