I went on this hunt this past weekend. WOW... This was the best 2 day hunt I have ever been on. The accommodations were first class. And the stands were too. I ended up with two does, one big boar and 2 coyotes.

I saw game every time I went to a stand.

Friday afternoon I sat in a stand to see if I could get a hog. I was treated to two small bucks that were feeding and fighting. There was a spike and a fork horn that had busted off one of his antlers. The fork horn was pushing that spike all over that field.

Saturday morning I saw three hogs right as it got light enough to see. The field was 300 yards long and he was at 200 yards. One shot right behind the ear and he dropped like a brick. The other two apparently were in the trap about 35 yards back and further right. When I shot I first thought they hit the fence but when it was light enough I could see they were in a trap. I think they triggered the door when I shot. Sounded like a tail gate being closed.

This boar had a long snout and big shoulders so I think it was more European wild boar than Ferrel hog.

About 20 minutes later I see something to my left. A coyote was crossing the field about 50 yards out. He also hit the ground with one shot from my .270 with Barnes Tipped Triple Shock solid copper bullets that I hand loaded to 3050 FPS.

I was very happy to see those bullets worked great on both big and small game.

The evening hunt I went to a new stand that I could actually see out over 500 yards. The deer started to come out about an hour before sunset. Unfortunately they were 350 yards out. It took about 15 mins but felt like an hour for a doe to get to within 200 yards.

Then a small buck started chasing her back the other way so I let a bullet fly. She took about 10 steps and dropped.

Well to my surprise the other deer did not leave the field. They ran back to the wood line and then came back out. however only the three small bucks (two spikes and a 4 or 6 pt) came close.

In fact the bigger buck tried to get the doe on the ground up and even tried to mount her. He finally gave up and came closer to greener pasture.

All toll I saw a total of 23 deer in the field by the time I got down to retrieve the deer I dropped.

The next morning I went out again to that same stand. Was not looking good. Then I saw why. A coyote was trotting across the field with something in his mouth. He was out at a little over 200 yards. When he stooped just before a fence I shot. He ran about 20 yards and started running in circles. I tried to shoot him again but he ran into the tree line. I ended up going over to find what he had in his mouth and found a deer tail and some hide.

I did not see the coyote from the field edge and was not wanting to go over the barbed wire fence but from the way he was acting I'm sure he will not be feeding on deer again.

I then walked up on a small doe laying down and put one in its head for my second deer of the weekend. I actually though it was the one the coyote was feeding on since I got to withing 15 feet before it looked at me. But was shocked to see it without a scratch.

I will be sure to book another hunt here again next year. And if I can get my son fired up will take him too.

If you go you have to ask about the ghost deer...

Thanks for a great time Michael!!!

I have openings for the weekend after thanksgiving(24-25), could hunt a group of up to 4. Also while hunting if a mature 140"+ walks out, you have the option of taking him for an additional $10/inch. No bucks have been taken in the last three years.

Just got back, weekend was short since I got my 2 deer 30 minutes after I sat down in the blind on a 200 yard field. Got one doe and one button buck at 154 yard. Dropped the doe and the other one just stood there and froze. Lined up and took it out too. Felt bad since I hit a button buck I thought was a doe but in my defense it was my first time hunting but Dusty the guide said it was alright since it was still considered an antler less. Tell you what, for my first time, they looked like the biggest deer in my scope I had ever seen. I have been public hunting at DCNF and never seen a deer through my scope until I went to this ranch. Dusty and Michael are top notch guys and the ranch house was first rate. Hell on Friday afternoon, we saw 7 deer on our way to the blind. Dusty showed me the ropes on field dressing, skinning and quartering the deer since I never done it before. I highly recommend them and plan on coming back if I can get my son off the X-Box. Their building a 50K sqft lodge and will love to make it back when its done. I could have stayed for the whole weekend but since I got my two deer early I stayed Saturday morning to hog hunt but didn't see any. I did see two does and a 6 point buck with two brow tines, so you might cal it a eight point, I'm new at this so I'm not too sure what you would call it. Hunter-Steve was there at the same time I was and he got two good sized boar. All in all bunch of good guys and a good ranch with lots of deer. Highly recommend.

I did not think it was possible to top the first hunt I had with Michale and Dusty at the Hageman Reserve but I did.

I saw a few does on Friday night but did not harvest one. Was very pleased to see that Naruto (Dan) had two on the skinning rack when I got back and he was excited about his first deer harvests. He must have told me 5 times about how it all went down and I did not get tired of hearing it. It was good to welcome a new hunter to the ranks.

Saturday morning I was able to take down 2 medium sized boars that dropped within 10 yards of each other.

After we skinned and quartered the two deer that Dan got and my two boar, Dan left and I had lunch. I then sat on the deck to have a cigar and a drink when I spotted a coyote out about 180 yards out. He made the mistake of hanging around long enough for me to get my gun, load it, and shoot. DRT

Decided to head to the field at 3pm. Did not have to wait long when 12 does with no fawns started waking out. The were not feeding. I ranged them at 168 yards and shot the largest of the 12. They had no clue what had happened and gave me sufficient time to aim and hit a second. I could have taken more but they soon figure it was not safe to stay in that field with two of their pack down and out.

I was back at the skinning pole before dark.

I ended up with more meat than I had room for in my coolers. Thanks to Dusty we fixed that quickly.

So this was the single best day I have ever had hunting. And I want to thank Dusty, Michael and the Hageman Reserve for providing this opportunity that I was able to share with my father on Sunday before he passed away Tuesday night. I will miss him but know I will see him again to share even more hunting adventures that are yet to come.

If they offer this again next year I will be sure to be there again.

Steve

I'll share what I experienced when I booked a hunt with Michael late season 2012 and let anyone who is considering booking a hunt with him decide for themselves.

The lodging is nice, you stay in a mobile home that is clean with cable TV and hot showers.

The jeep that I was told I could use to go to the stand and back was out of gas when I arrived. The back of the jeep was covered in blood and stunk not to mention the flies. After it was fueled I drove it one time to the stand and parked it after that trip. The brakes were metal to metal making a grinding sound and it just wasn't safe to drive.

There are several different stands on the property and they are very nice. Atascosa's blinds if I remember right.

There were feeders at every stand site but several of the feeders hadn't been filled so needless to say they didn't throw and nothing came in.

At the end of my two day hunt I had not seen one single deer or hog.

I accepted that some hunts are just a bust and was planning on heading out.

Michael insisted that he had a 100% success rate and offered me a third day free of charge. I told him that he did not have to make that offer but he insisted because he had not had a hunter not encounter game on the ranch that he managed.

I hunted another stand the third day and still did not see game.

Michael offered me another hunt in December and I accepted. I called to schedule and was told that the ranch was to muddy to hunt because of recent rains.
