I just got a lease up in Shackelford County (I know it's getting late to set up my lease but I took what I could get)... Curious to see if anyone out in that area has any input on how the deer are looking out that way... I know there are big deer in that county, just seeing if anyone wants to share their observations...

My lease is South of Albany about midway between Albany and Baird.

THANKS!

welcome My lease is south of Albany about 6 miles off of 6.
I have been feeding for a couple of months and are getting lots of does during feed times and bucks later on like 1-2 am. We've got some reasonably good rain so far and they all look healthy. Racks look good also.
One thing I've noticed about Shackleford deer is that they are real skiddish. It is rare that I drive around the lease and see any deer. Unlike the Hill country deer. I hunt 1000 acres with 4 other guys and if you don't pop a nice buck on opening day you may not see a good one for the rest of the season. They don't take pressure very well.
Best to get your blind and feeder out asap to let them get accustomed to it. Good luck

Bucks do seem to be scarce during the daylight hours. Lots of hogs out that way as well. Welcome.

How close are you to Ebaa Iron? We hunt around the same distance down HWY 6?

I am off of hwy 6 and have been seeing deer during the daylight hours from 130-150 class bucks. Looks like it is gonna be a great year.

No clue where Ebaa Iron is... I'm off highway 283 about 5 miles south of town (maybe not even that far.)

latxbowhunter, thanks for the picture! And yes, if there are deer like that out and about, it does look like it might be a great year!

I have seen some real bruisers in the northern part of the county, not so much in the southern part.

Which side of 283 are you? East or West?

we hunt just west of the weather ball on the north side of moran hwy. been out there about 13 years and my opinion is this. deer are very fat and healthy, numbers finally up year on year for the first time in awhile. but the rains seemed to come a little too late this year for horns as our development is basically unchanged to down slightly since last year.

latxbowhunter, thats a beautiful buck, what age you guys think on him?

That's what I did my first year in Throckmorton. He came out when it was just me there and we visited for an hour or better. Called him up the next yr when I moved to another part of the county and he gave me the whole low down of the area. He is as good as they get. up

I hunt between Baird and Albany just off of 283, been there about 13 years. I have taken 2 upper 150 class deer and have seen bigger. I missed a mid 160 to 170 deer with my bow 2 years ago. I still think about that buck on a weekly basis.

How close are you to Macarty Lake of the Baird HWY? A couple miles from Albany

You're just West of EBAA Iron. Maybe Southwest a little.

We hunt off FM122 as well. I would bet we're really close to being neighbors.
