I am looking at one if these in 308 at a local gun shop? Had anyone had any experience with this gun?

Vanguard is a great rifle. I would suggest a trigger change and then bad the action. It will not let you down. I have a 257Wby and 270Win that shoots lights out.

I have the exact Vanguard S2 IN 308 that your are discussing. It is a good gun and shoots well, as stated the trigger is not as good as it should be. I topped it with a Leupold VX3 4.5x14 and I can punch around 3/4" groups with 165gr reloads. The stock could use glass bedding and a new trigger, then, I have no doubt that it could tighten up to at least 1/2" at 100 yards.
