Wife and I went to Slow Bone. Bitter Brisket Face!! Sausage, ribs & chicken were good. Sides good too. He uses Hickory and cooks on a gasser, there was way way to much smoke on the Brisket. very Bitter. May give it another chance but not impressed at all.

Just went to a joint in Fredericksburg called Cranky Frank's. Had the marbled brisket and ribs. The fat was rendered beautifully on the brisket. It melted like butta.... Very delish. Ribs were good too. Above avg.

Got a buddy that lives in Llano and he frequently drives from Llano to Fredericksburg to eat there. I will have to try it next time I am that direction.

Went to Baby J's in Palestine yesterday. Brisket was average. Ribs were amazing. Can't wait to get some more of those ribs

My brother and I tried Bartley's BBQ in Grapevine yesterday, which was one of the DFW joints to make the Texas Monthly Top 50. We arrived at Bartley's just a couple of minutes after they opened. The restaurant is located in strip mall and doesn't have the ambiance of your typical barbecue joint. I ordered the three meat plate with sliced brisket, turkey, and hot links. For my sides, I got pinto beans and green beans. I also picked up some pecan cobbler, which happens to be one of my favorite desserts when cooked well.

The brisket had a nice crust and a noticeable smoke ring, but it was really chewy and dry. I usually like going for barbecue right when a joint opens because the barbecue is usually right off the smoker and hasn't been sitting around long. The problem with this is that you also run the risk of getting served yesterday's meats that were left over. I am afraid that the brisket may have been the latter. The turkey had a nice Cajun rub on it, but I didn't taste a hint of smoke and it was also dry. The hot links and sides were both pretty unremarkable and very bland. I was also served a hot roll with my meal that tasted great and was much better than the meats.

My brother got the rib plate and gave me one of them. They had a sweet glaze to them and a were very flavorful. The problem with them was that they were very tough and hard to get off the bone. Toughness aside, they were the best meat I had at Bartley's.

Since I was disappointed with my meal, I didn't have high expectations for the dessert. After the first bite of pecan cobbler, I knew that I had nothing to worry about. The pecan cobbler was absolutely perfect and was some of the best I have ever had.

Despite the greatness of the dessert, I was very disappointed in this joint. For the life of me, I will never understand how this place made the Texas Monthly Top 50 Barbecue Joints and a place like Smitty's did not make the list. In my opinion, this place is highly overrated by Texas Monthly.

Has anyone else ever been here?

Been to Bartley's ONCE...even made a post on a BBQ forum asking how in the heck they made the list. Their food is awful.

Went to Cluck & Oink today in Sherman! Very pleased! Brisket,Pulled Pork,BBack Ribs Jap Sausage, potato Salad, Baked Beans. All very good, meat could have used a little more smoke on it but was still good. 3Sauces hot, sweet and regular. Sweet was my favorite but all 3were good. Reasonably priced great service, I'll go back? It was worth the trip from McKinney!

Just left 3 Stacks in Frisco! Bitter Brisket Face again. They have natural Gas assist smokers and leave it in to long. You cannot get enough oxygen in those type cookers for a clean burn and that's where the bitterness comes from. I had moist brisket with lots of bark and it was very bitter, but very tender. Beef rib was the same very tender and very bitter. Mac & cheese was very good, potato salad & cheesy corn very average.
Every place I've been to with gas assist smokers have the same problem bitter brisket. They just don't burn clean enough. Look at all of your very top end places and you wont find anything but wood for fuel!

Went there for lunch the other day. Second time I have been there and left unimpressed again. I had the same experience with the brisket that you did. I also had turkey that didn't have even a hint of smoke flavor to it. I did get a couple of baby back ribs that were above average, but everything else was mediocre at best.
