Not cranky, it is just that we have been there before, we know what works and doesn't work.

X2, sir I have cleaned out a lot of totally rotten ice chests. Some had fish in them for WEEKS in the Summer with no ice. Rotten, maggots, really nasty stuff. Bleach & Dawn dish soap WORKS! Just use enough bleach. Same thing with chest freezers...have had them go out and the meat & seafood inside rotted for A LONG TIME and after some nausea I held my breath and got it cleaned out. I mean sick BAD. Lots of bleach, Dawn dish soap, water, scrub brush, top off with water & bleach, close lid, swoosh it around , let soak, dump, rinse well, let dry in the sun, and NO more odor...ever.

Am I the only one that has never had a rotten/funked up ice chest?
I just wash it out with a water hose and let air dry right after every use. That's been working for me for last 15 years.

There is something like similar that you can buy at janitorial supply houses. It literally can suck the smell out of anything, it is some sort of enzyme.

I had a deep freeze that got unplugged and everything ruined. An appliance repairman told me to wash it out with dawn then squeeze a tube of Colgate toothpaste all around on the inside and sit in the sun with lid closed for a few days. Did the trick.

I will bet you 3 dollars that if you take the lid seal out and see the funk underneath it, you will solve your problem... had the same thing happen to me, the crap under the seal was absolutely disgusting.

the plastic is plastic... if you'ev cleaned it with bleach, I bet it's the seal.

X2, that's why I fill mine up after scrubbing (including seal) - then close the lid & slosh it around. The bleach water will get all the cracks & crevices including the seal area. Works for me....

It has to be the seal, no where else for the smell to be coming from after he has washed and bleached. Just pull it out, and put it in the bottom of the cooler to soak in your solution, and scrub the seal channel real well.

I was just about to suggest this. Vinegar is king.

We had to do the same with ours when we left a fish in there over the weekend in the trunk of the car. Wife handled it with apple cider vinegar and bleach. Did the trick.

I'm pretty sure my wife would tell me to go eff myself if I asked her to clean out a stinky fish cooler.

It is too easy, a bag of charcoal cost a few dollars, and you still get to use the all of the charcoal when you are finished. Net cost a little time and a little soapy water.

yah charcoal idea is great solution...just get some charcoal, light it, set the cooler on top of it...wait 30 minutes and throw the soapy water on the fire to put it out.
